I hired a kid years ago against my better judgement(my wife knew his folks). I had an inkling that this kid was an entitled *dipstick, but I hadn't factored in the depths of his worthlessness. I finally had enough of his "hands in pockets" way of working, so I called the uniform company and had all of the pockets in his coveralls sewn shut. It didn't improve his productivity, so I fired him.

Thing is now that kids don't get to work on cars like we older fellows did , you can't do much to cars like we used to in what I call the good o'l days , too many special tools needed on modern cars . Back in the day a few simple tools plus cars were simple and you could understand how to fix them because they were so basic .
I think that may be part of the lack of mechanical skill but not an excuse for never checking oil , some basic things should be known .
Working at a University I see a lot of kids that have no worlds skills , their parents have done everything for them and kept them safe inside a box....it's going to be a problem in coming years when (if) they get out on their own.

I do have one kid who lives back of me that tinkers with small engines a lot and I talk shop with him . He's got the smarts for it and I did give him a book for him to learn more about diagnosing and the like .
There is some hope for some .

Dead right! It's called 'big company mentality', where employees don't give a damn about any company equipment. If they had to pay for it or owned it like the boss it would be a far different story. Basically they would never treat their own gear the way they do company stuff. See it all the time.

I've been saying this for awhile, but everything comes down to one simple principle. Respect.

There just ain't enough of it in the world these days. Kids don't respect their parents, or their teachers. Workers don't respect their employers, and employers don't respect their employees. Governments don't respect their citizens......and so on.

That one missing principle is key to everything.

well it just got worse...they picked up the 3 diesel gensets and dropped off a 4th....it doesnt make electricity....breaker was in the off position!!!!!!!!! How much do you charge someone for 30 seconds worth of diagnostic time???

Nothing, but it sounds like you got some steady business there and would look at it as income.

Gotta confess. Power was out. Had to use my 23 year old Honda generator. Kept shutting down. The low oil light was burned out. I still managed to figure it out all by my lonesome.

Around here they would unplug the alert system and keep running it

Yep,saw a guy weld the clutch dogs on a hay mower/conditioner once cause they kept kicking out. After about an hour straightening guards and oiling up the knife section it quit stalling the tractor.

I recently scored a pile of dead saws for $22 each
One of them was an MS660 that the local dealer said was dead so the owner would buy a new one.

they cant flip a breaker or check oil levels.......you really think they could figure out how to bypass the oil shutdown

You need to move down under.

Here we associate respect with mateship
A mate is your friend but its more than that. Its something only Aussies understand.
In Australia you dont always need to know anyone's name..... it doesn't matter cause we just say, hi mate, hey mate, how ya going mate.
We (most of us) take pride in having mateship as a core value.
For me, respect is something that is earnt. Its never given nor granted.

My children have been raised to show respect, and taught how to earn it.
We have taught them that when you do something stupid that erodes respect, you then have to work to earn it back.

I see the kids that are not taught these values and know that my kids will come through on top in the end.

Sorry for the off topic rant but I believe its a very important topic in today's world.

When we had our first kid, my mother said to me....... remember this.
If you ever threaten to do something as punishment, follow through with it.

One day my kids had the lounge room covered in toys that I had asked them to pick up.
I came in and told them that if they didnt put them away they would all go in the bin

I got a reply of "yeah yeah"

I saw RED!

The bin came out and I started filling it.
the kids screamed NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO and scrambled for their favorites first.
I got most of the toys.
I made them watch me put them in the main bin and then made them watch it all go in the garbage truck

Never again were the words Yeah Yeah muttered and never again was a mess left anywhere
