Why not drop the floor, cut and window the skirt, and then poke a reed valve somewhere in there?
I've thought having a reed in the skirt of a piston could be a good idea, but then you have a part that's not only opening and closing as its reciprocating at the same time. That big gulf of air n fuel could play a big role in power but you may only get a few big cuts in before your refueling and good chance of waisted fuel that won't get burnt off without a tuned pipe to help force the gasses back into the jug

What are you fellas doing with intakes like the 272 and 288 series cylinder ports with the odd shaped port for mounting screws?
When using a stock carb and intake I only lower the flat area and leave the lumps alone. Sometimes a center notch to gain a little extra duration without a bunch of spitback.

I have particular interest on 288 methods as I'll be porting mine in the next couple months. The shape of the intake raised my eyebrow.

Well, this has been another very interesting read... But I want to touch on one thing quick about duration. A reputable builder advised me that he likes to set the relationship between intake and exhaust duration just about square, favoring exhaust slightly. That method worked well with my 394. :D

I dont know of another modern saw to use them (others may)...Randy has a build thread on the 6100.

Some of the bigger Chinese saws are reed valve induction. I'd not have paid them much attention if it hadn't have been for that, just caught my eye as an unusual feature in modern saws. makes for an odd looking saw too what with the carb going straight into the crankcase rather than the cylinder.
