Funny how my 2 ported early version 462s and my 10 mm 044 just keep running strong.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with good oil mix, proper maintenance and keeping your chains sharp!

Also, I do a good bit of milling with both OEM and Asian 660s and have never lost one! Must just be good luck!

Anything made can be broken, you just have to try a little!

I doubt it’s luck, more likely the number of hours on it. I have no idea of the actual numbers, but I’d bet most of the 462s that this happened to had 500–1000 hours on them

I can tell you that it’s hard to judge just how many hours go on a saw. When I had my 661 ported, Scott asked me to guess how many hours I thought were on it. I guessed 280-300… MDG said 70 Hrs 45 Mins and 17 Seconds… I was shocked it was that few.

I'm sure I have nowhere near your experience with working on saws, but I've seen enough of them to know a lot of these guys don't give a rat's A$$ about mix and will push a saw mercilessly with a dull chain or poor tune. I've had two saws come to me (for repair) where they have been pushed so hard that the disintegrated OEM clutch ripped the brake band out of the saw!

I have also seen that when pros (who use their saws hard every day) follow my advice on mix and keeping the chains sharp, that saw problems decrease markedly.

That does not mean there have not been design flaws, but most of them will give good service life if properly maintained. IMO, this is especially important with clone saws as the quality control is often lacking.

IMO, milling is one of the most stressful things you can do to a saw, so maintaining your milling saws properly is very important.

Just my 2 cents for whatever it is worth!

Shouldn't 500-1000 hours be ring-failure/replacement, and not top end/bottom end failure/destruction?

Or is that falling into the "luck" category?
