Now this just might be me but I feel that a good criteria for an "underrated saw" would be that's its price is a good 30-50% less than its comparable counterparts. Some of these saws listed are by no means underrated lol.

Yes that was the word I was looking for it taken for granted. Like when I saw the 254xp listed. That saw ain't underrated it just that there's not enough to go around lol.
depend where we live Wayne.
Most of my purchases happen to go through my main dealer, if we're speaking about swaped in saws they had, here is the price I've paid for them:
Minty 353, 150$
Minty 42 Special, 48$
Well used 246, 60$
Well used 242 xpg, 60$

In the used marked (the little we has), 346 goes for around 360$, 357 probleby 400$, 242&254 around 180$, 246 a tad under 180$. The few times I've seen a 262 xpg for sale its twice the ammount we pay for a 254.

In my country a 254 and 246 is two very underrated saws.

My Makita/Dolmar 6401 with a BBK is by far the most underrated chainsaw that I own. Weekend Lumberjack and I saved it five years ago after it was straight-gassed by the original owner. It runs perfectly today and will stay with both my Stihl 046 Mag and my Echo CS-670. All three are fabulous saws that thumb their noses at new saws that sell today for a grand.

The 357 is another underrated saw. Unfairly lives in shadow of the 262 and it will give the 262 a run for its $. I personally like them better than a 262 honestly.
Agree! I just had to get a 262xp after hearing all the hype. Good saw, but like the 357xp mo better. Sold the 262, but have three 357s'.

My favorite chainsaw period.
I don’t see them as underrated. They usually get high praise when discussed. My DD357 wood be the last to go if the need arises. I recently used it to cut up a poplar tooth pic and it was a lightsaber! Only gripe I have is the leak prone oil pump lines and the stingy oiler, which is easy to mod for higher output.
Yep, I have a mastermind 357 that will never get sold. Then another I ported 7 years ago that is golden.

Now there is a saw along with the 555 that I could see being underrated being that alot of guys probably look right past them and go for the 550 and 562...

Edit to add: alot of people love the 346NE and 357XP. On paper the 545 and 555 respectively are very close in performance to those. We bought a new 555 at my work last winter and so far I love it
Toof! If I had to go with a new saw it'd be a 545 & or a 555..

As someone who owns a ported 357 that has a very nasty attitude and a bone stock 262, it's hard for me to make a fair comparison as my 357 was already modded when I acquired the 262. I THINK that on equal footing, the 357 is faster in all but the largest wood you might mess with using a 20" bar. I think the 262 might have the torque to pull ahead of the 357 in that scenario. Pure speculation on my part, I fully admit. It's been awhile since I've run a stock 357. I do enjoy my 262 very much and intend to leave it as-is. I have a tendency to not grind on NLA cylinders. But I've seen vids of some really strong 262s after coming out of the mod shop and they are impressive in their own right. Two excellent saws in my opinion and it might be pretty hard for me to choose one over the other. The AV on the 357 does make it smoother in the hands though

The most under rated saw I run, and I have 4 of them, is a Husqvarna 576xp. 1 of which is an auto tune version. Way back several years ago husky stopped production of the 372 for a little while. While they were in that hiatus I needed another new saw so I got a 575xp and Ive been running that series of saws ever since. Smoother than a 372 and faster in the size timber I cut, so I never went back. In the interest of full disclosure, Ive been stumping with a 390xp for close to a year now and LOVE IT! If I don't change my mind I will never buy another 5 series saw as long as I can get the 390.

024, good little saw that gets overshadowed by the 026. I sold one to a friend, and he had a 025, and so did all of his friends....he kept saying are you sure this 024 will be as good...well he was shocked when he ran it...and when you can pick up 024-026 for $50-75 at times they are tough to beat!

Yep. My 024s, is just angry. Damn fine saws.
