Low RPM torque/throttle response felling saw

OK, having felled with the 288 a bit now, I like it...but she's a mite heavy, at least for the size of stuff I've been cutting. The goal is light weight, grunt off idle, and longest bar for cc. Which after messing with my 266s and researching 372 vs 272 makes me think 272. A video by hotsaws101 and this quote by Holmen tree on AS stuck out to me.

"Yes the old edition 372XP is touchy in the wood. When I switched from the older Stihls (066 064 044) I found the 372 only had good power at WOT. Let off the throttle a bit in the cut while felling with the bar buried and the chain would seize with chips jammed in the bar rails. (I have experienced the chips in the rails plenty myself)
Keep the 372 rpm high and it was a laser in any size wood the 22" b/c could handle.

Interesting thing I noticed when a few years later when I bought a 272XP which is 13 years older then my 2006 372XP. The 272XP cylinder design didn't have the top end only high power capability. But more like the modern 372XP X Tork power with some grunt also on the lower midrange revs.

Ideally the older 272XP power band may be more user friendly with room to modify the porting and compression for more top end power, but in the end buying a new 372XP XT EPA regulations rules."

Now, I have an XS 2166, and I'm getting to splitting hairs here, but I wonder how it compares to a 272 with a least a BGD, MM, etc. I think the 2166 is a bit heavier and I prefer the KISS of the 272 vs. strato. I did some experimenting weighing saws and see what I can hold out sideways in front of me arms extended as if reaching and cleaning out a face or starting a cut, and 266 with a LW 24" is the limit of what I could do very much. I can get the 2166 28" out there but it would wear me out. Heck I did it with the 288 and 32" heavy stihl bar...

I can tell you I have ported 266 268 and 272s
With a 24" I can tell no real difference
At all but the 2 piece ignition for whatever reason the 266s are just stronger or feels that way
I have no need for longer bar's we have small tree's.

I might like my Boost Port P50 better than my ported 390xp, maybe it's just an old guy thing. I prefer my ported 372 over either of those. The 390 just isn't that much better than my 372's to justify the weight.

Interesting on the two piece. That’s all I have.

I did some boring on some fat rounds in my yard last night with a 24” tsumura full wrap. Light and handy. Pulled/lugged it well. I’ll have to try 28” skip. Only thing is, this morning my hands feel a little tingly. I think @Johnmn came up with a way to trim 288 AV springs for a 266, I’ll have to try it. @Czed

Good saws but a stock or ported 372 is the *s-word for most of the cutting we have here.

I have heard a 390 pretty much has to be ported to justify the weight. Maybe the same with the 288 but to me a 288 is fine stock (BGD) because I’m not looking for speed from it, I’m looking for grunt. My 395 is XS ported, if I want to raise heck, I will get it out.

Parts should be here today.

Had to try the full wrap on another one & man I like it!
Not as wide as my 272xp full wrap!

Should be excellent for my needs.

266 combustion chamber is very small compared to a 272 much larger chamber and is the biggest difference I've found.
272 however has all parts available from Husqvarna sans the HD filter which can be had from HLSupply.
South American made two piece coils have dried up, China ones barely make enough spark to see even, let alone run well, OEM is still available last I looked and worth the extra money for only having to buy once. I replace them in sets now as when one goes the other is soon to follow suite.

I'm buying a few sets from different sources they'll be around 100.00 or so a set which I think is reasonable

Physical size was a consideration for me in a felling saw...
As much as I love my 272xp, the Shinny is more nimble and a little lighter than the Husky.
Both are very close in performance.

Not exactly...exhaust port will be bigger on a larger bore. 266 is a higher compression saw from the factory.
Like any saws cylinder the trick is to open up the bottle neck and viola.
A 266 will run better with a 268xp open port full windowed style piston vs the full circle skirted with windows piston they came with in its own right without any other changes.

Never ran one parts for a 757 I worked on were difficult to find.
Nice saw though.

I have a 920 it's neck and neck with my stock 288s

they made an open port, and a closed port during the run of those

In my opinion for
production because they cut all size timber for profit and I've yet to meet anyone running a ported saw locally.
My retired 40 year timber company owner/faller brother
Never heard of ported saws
Until I had some he ran mostly 181/281/288/394/395s
For the volume he cut
I don't recall him having 70cc saws he may have but I don't remember any.
After trying mine he said he'd run ported 70cc saws if he was still working because of the lighter weight
everyone ran big displacement that's all there was in commercial big timber saws jonsereds was big locally
Stihls took their place and has a big presence now.
You have to understand the guy's I know have multiples of each saw and parts to keep them running
Saves time and money.
