Wyby 288xp build from box of parts

Assembled just enough to run and spray test for air leaks. Still needs a few things. Piston, ring, shutoff switch, couple muffler outlet covers, proper fuel tank and fuel line. I have the top cover and some handles. Also have clutch, etc. It makes 150 psi BGD and has some piston slap.

Makeshift crank/bearing tooling.

The proper worm should have a flange…this one seems to work but I haven’t tried with the clutch and all yet.

NOS WJ, no groove for the arm on the diaphragm. Hm. I have a couple tillys I might combine to make one good one.



One bar stud fell out. Knurled it a little with a punch for some press fit and sealed it with motoseal.
Had to swap tanks (how does one remove the spring antivibe mounts?) and couldn’t get the fuel line from the other tank to fit right, so it leaks when tipped.
One of my top covers is cut for a stack and I intend to cut nasty dusty wood with it, so I need a Vstack, filter, and sock eventually. Have a new clutch cover and flag, need an outer dawg…have the 7th mount.

I’ve seen that one but the mounts with springs have alum pucks in the ends and no notches for the tool. I guess vise grips but…

Been awhile since I replaced springs in a 288, that’s what I first started cutting timber with and I went through a few of them. Used to be pretty familiar with em.

Here’s the tool I used for the rubber mounts and the spring has an Allen head bolt inside it

Filters are easy to find, I'm sure you'll wear out a sock at some point but I can send you one if you need it. Also, I can get measurements if you want to make your own v-stack, they're pretty simple little parts. If the diaphragm doesn't have a notched tit then don't worry about it, just run it as it is. Some of them had notches, some didn't, I don't think that your diaphragm was made in error.

I've successfully used a pair of long needle nose pliers a few times on 288 rubber AV buffers David. The trick is to grab as near to the base plate rather than further up where the rubber will twist like Goofys neck, if you get my drift.

Yeah, that’s how I do the rubber ones.


@chiselbit now that you mention it, I think I knew that you just stick the Allen thru the threaded hole in the alum and I forgot…thanks.

I compared 181 and 288 IPLs
Looks like I have the disct'd 181 worm, and most of the other parts are disco'd too. Looks like maybe the 181 pump is more "hollow" behind the pressed in dust ring compared to @Onan18 pics of 288 pump in his thread.
I think the thing to do is pop the disct'd dust ring out of the oil pump and run the 395 style worm...it doesn't fit as is...but that might leave too much gap. There were a lot of chips in the cavity. Must have been run "open". I don't see the sealing ring on the 288 IPL. I'm at work, gonna go home and compare/measure. My oil pump plunger/gear that the worm drives is nearly worn out as well...

I'll look through my junk and see if I have an extra 288 oil pump. I should have plenty of smalls for the 281/288 pumps.

You better buy it, it’s the last one. ;-) I can make them if I have to, and will probably go what I assume is later 288 style.
Discovered the dang stop switch is different (larger) from the myriad extras I have around…


Put it in wood a little tonight. Runs good for 130 psi hot! I like this saw. I think I am a 60/80cc guy as opposed to a 50/70.

Thanks much to all who have helped. Still have some odds and ends I need to get/order. I will add them to my parts wanted thread. Interesting mix of crusty and nice new parts.

I have a new Pro Safety Full wrap for it, not sure if I will keep it. Also have a stock half wrap but I think it’s pretty bent and chewed up.

Butchered 181 wrap, it broke my heart to see it because it was the straightest, cleanest, least damaged 181/281 handle I've seen and some putz had chopped it up.

Kill switch should be the same as a 61/272 switch, fyi.

Unless you're running 181/really frickin' early 281 cases, they use a fancy obsolete and hard to find switch.

My cases have no data plate...old style oil pump...hole in both my cases is way too big for switch.

Maybe I'll fix that wrap.
