I have seen pictures of cutters with the gullet cleaned out at an angle and some 90 degrees, or blunt to the wood. I've done both and I cannot notice a difference. Has anyone else tried this? I'd like to think the angle would be better, but I'm unable to tell a difference in what I have to cut.
Vertical and more blunt is fastest, but we’re talking a tenth or two

Look at like this. The side plate only needs to severe the thickness of the chip your pulling. The rest is just along for the ride. Chip will push off the cutter to the tailing side. A sharp gullet or angle seems like it won't matter.

Gullet day!

I think this is the slowest I have worked on a chain. I think I square ground it a month ago. I'm so far behind on stuff....

What's the best angle for cutting the back of the cutter off? I what how it exactly reduces vibration. I think I've seen some stock chain come that way, but the angle wasn't as steep as some racing chains.

Wow! This is some amazing chain porn! Can't believe I haven't seen this yet.

You've all convinced me to learn how to square file. (Hey it's a start) Where do I begin? Can you square file any chain or just the square chains?

All of my chains were round filed originally.

I want to think I had read somewhere to clip the back of the cutter to the centerline of the last rivet......or it was a really cool dream.

Update: after looking over a chain, I don't think that is correct. It would remove a lot of the tooth.

Found an amazing PDF from Oregon on the Madsens website. http://www.madsens1.com/muu_barchain.htm click "Racing Chain Secrets"

"We have observed that most competitive cutters modify 3/8” pitch chisel chains such as OREGON® 72 series, or similar chain from other manufacturers. In the OREGON® line, they appear to select OREGON® 72LP because it is a low vibration chain (it has the clipped-heel design) and because it is 0.050”
gauge."

"To improve chip flow, the trailing edge of the cutter top plate is clipped at about a 45 degree angle"

I'm puzzled with that Stihl chain...they say new high performance but do I see the double depth guage from a safety chain there?
It slows down a 16" lp setup just a bit but does cut pretty smooth. The saw is ported. You might never notice with a stock saw.

Maybe Stihl is doing away with all yellow chain. Hard to believe, but I remember seeing not long ago on their website something about all the yellow chains saying discontinued. I didn't believe it. Too stupid of a move.
