That Stihl Hexa chain ad is kind of dumb with no mention of the new 6 sided file.
Looks like a .325 to me, I like to know what that file's part# is.

I'm puzzled with that Stihl chain...they say new high performance but do I see the double depth guage from a safety chain there?
I don’t see it but I won’t buy it if it does. My dislike of safety chain has more to do with it’s poor bore cutting abilities for me than it’s cutting speed. I can get it to cut decent bucking. But bore cutting performance is lackluster. Same for semi chisel... I can make it eat but bore cutting performance is poor. I bore cut a lot of hardwood trees when felling timber to be sold for sawlogs. I need a chain that performs well doing that so I will stick with full chisel non safety chain unless something better comes out. Square bores efficiently as well but is harder for me to file out in the woods so round is what I use. All in what is easiest and works for you I guess?

Safety chain depth gauges are a pain to file having so much more surface area.

See beyond the Stihl Hexa safety chain in that advertisement.
Yes it is a green consumer chain and with a side plate hook like that Stihl has to cover their ass if a weekender stuck that on their MS391. Easy enough to make it non safety for a guy who wants to grind the ramps off.

Most guys would be interested in that unique file where he can put that Husqvarna X Cut style of grind into his 72LGX chain with a easy filing stroke of a round file.
Just don't get carried away lowering the depth gauges, Lol.

Seems to me like lowering the round file .020” or a little more would produce the same or better outcome. Plus, the chips would roll into the gullet better without the abrupt angle change. Guessing that because of the harder steel used, they can get similar life from more acute angles resulting in a faster cut.

With that much side plate hook with a round file would make a very weak cutting edge. Slightest bit of dirt would dull it fast.
This Hexa file would make a true flat chisel profile severing wood fiber much easier with less effort then a round filed profile.
When I say "true flat chisel profile" I mean the same profile as a hand wood chisel or a plane.
I'd like to try it out on my work chains. I'd imagine a standard 30° top plate angle would help the sideplate profile cut a bit better then say 15° chisel bit spec.

(Wilhelm put me on to this, works great.)

I switched to a diamond cutoff since these photos, much less heat generated so you don't harden the depth gauges.

Great chain, right!?
I take a bench grinder to mine.

I know I am running low on all the Vanguard loops I have been gifted.
Good hard cutters, excellent cutting performance (round filed).

I have a Husqvarna chain that has the Vanguard links. It cuts really well. Not sure why you guys are hacking them all up. It cut just as fast as Archer and Oregon. Smooth too.
