i'am really not a PopUp lover but for the first try i choose the PopUp because the thickness of the cast on the intake side is very thin, i don't want it to put much stress on it on my first try. I have another stock piston, maybe i will do a squish cut in the future.
Here is what i mean....

YepAir is a liquid it has drag and friction it makes a boundary layer of air not really moving that's why dust doesn't get blown off your cars paint job even at 100mph.
The dimples are called turbulators basically it makes the walls slippery air can't really stick to it allowing the liquid to move faster making a turbulent flow braking up the laminar flow helping in the mixing atomisation of air/fuel as well.
That's my basic understanding of it.
Stihl have been putting them in there rubber intakes on chainsaws unnoticed for many years. (Probably other brands do this too in there rubber intakes).
Google fluid dynamics if your ever bored is a good read.
You can see the turbulaters on the rubber intake of this Stihl 088 the dimples do the same thing.

And nature has known about it for about a million years before we worked it out one example is shark skin.Same reason a dimpled golf ball goes further, the tech has been know for years. Go rough on the intake and smoother on the exhaust.
Snackies cellulite would be another gooder exampleAnd nature has know about it for about a million years before we worked it out one example is shark skin.
I would have thought it would look a lot worse after 3 months! Can't say I like the looks of that filter after use.
