Two out of three of these were damaged during Helene relief efforts, and they were declared a total loss. Some braindead private on autopilot let one get crushed by a falling tree after getting the bar wedged and stuck. Guess the Guard doesn't like sending off saws for repairs. Almost got my hands on the damaged ones; I intended on fixing them up. It is what it is.

Forest Service is the same way, if it ends up costing more than 1/2 the price of the saw, it gets tossed and they get a new one. I was able to pull 4 Huskys (562, 576 and two 372s) out of the burn pile before they got burned and with about $100 in parts got three of them running for them.

Yeah at least they’re cheap saws they’re buying. Hard to justify 80-100$ an hour plus parts on a 400$ saw

Very true. I found some older Stihl models (not familiar with Stihl all that much) in one of the supply cages, and they looked pretty pricey. Inoperable of course. They were covered in a mountain of dust so they must’ve cheaped out a while back.

Next time you’re in that supply cage wipe the dust off and tell us the numbers on top cover just out of curiosity. I know they used to use a lot of 045, 056 and 038 all of weren’t cheap saws and built like a tank.

I will definitely take a look next time I’m there. They looked pretty stout. The plastic itself was more of a boxy design, and there seemed to be more orange than white.

2 questions if I may:

1) How quickly should the fuel tank vent (254) bleed down?

2) How do you remove the fuel tank vent to replace it?

I put the vacuum tester on the tank and it will bleed down slowly but from 5 in. Hg down it is pretty slow. I guessing the fuel pump cannot overcome that much vacuum...?

YouTube says drive a sharp screw into the vent and pull it out...I tried pushing it out from inside the tank but have not been successful with that venture.

Thanks,

Mark

No one has a suggestion for "how to remove the tank vent from a 254"?

TIA

From another site,,,
On the 254, there is a grey palstic tube that runs across the top of the fuel tank, you need to grip it with some long nose pliers and push it out, you will also need to undo the AV mounts so you can get the tube and breather out of the tank.

I think, usually you just replace the little end filter rather than the entire thing.

Now that I have a couple of new OEM fuel tank vents I can see that, but I still need to figure out how to get the old one out and a new one in. That goes for the complete unit, or just the little filter in the end. The PN for the vent assembly includes both pieces, any idea what I could use for just the vent portion?

BTW, I tested one of the new assemblies last night and the vent in the saw is definitely much slower that the new one. The new one holds no vacuum and immediately drops to 0, the one in the tank comes down slowly to 5 In/Hg and almost imperceptibly from there on down.
