The more hours I put on this 390 the more I like it, such a nice saw to run.
Its like a 372 on steroids.

The cylinder cleaned up nicely, now I need the piston assembly, intake and carburetor gaskets, base gasket, and a muffler gasket (there was one on the saw when I took it apart but nothing shows in the IPL).

Looks like my piston choices are ProLine, LRB, Highway, and Meteor or the Dukes coated piston. I'm inclined to go with the Meteor but I am open to other suggestions as well. I can't find anyone that has all the parts I need in one stop.

Can’t go wrong with Meteor.

I like the dukes pistons. He has the coated ones and aftermarket gaskets not sure if you want OEM gaskets or not

So both of these are supposedly for the 288 but look different...was there a few different styles of worm gears ?
Thanks
Ernie

There are 2 different worm gears…early, plastic or bronze and, newer, plastic. The new ones incorporate a dust cover that is a separate part earlier.

See Barrett’s IPLs for 1988 vs 1993

The left one is for early 281(8), there's half of the dust shield on the oil pump, its a silver ring pressed in. The right one is the later one. They DO NOT interchange because the pump gear is in DIFFERENT pitch.
