On the subject of muffler mods I can say that I noticed a huge difference in my 353 after doing a similar mod to paragonbuilders.

Dang it I wish I could make it to one of these gtg's!! Turkey hunting is a huge priority in my life so the entire month of May is booked...Someday.....

Ah, I was unsure of that...

In that case, Thank you! its not as nice as most builders, but I'm getting better. Not that it means much in this case lol!

I have 5 more brandy new chains on order, and a few extra new ones still too, but we can do the test however we feel like. I can throw brandy new chains on each one, or we can do same B&C for each...just takes longer.

Matt I have to say that I thought my saw was going to get trounced as well. I really didn't think the muffler mod would make much of a difference in the challenge.
Remember I ran your hyway saw last year! That's one reason why I bought this one. Lol!
However, this may be a good thing. If a LARGE, muffler opening really wakes this saw up stock, what will it do for your ported saws? This may take them to a whole new level!!!
Either that or my saw isn't stock and Wiggs gave me a spicy 350 for the price of a stock one.

this was my thinking also, so many variables involved.... i am thinking each cyl would probably perform optimally with a different muffler mod.... :sconf::sconf::sconf:
great job and effort matt, thanks for some good reading and vids.

Hey Matt, if you got the video stuff set up. and if I can make this GTG, I'd like to do a similar test comparing my 10 mm 044 to my new (to me) MS440.

Neither saw is ported, and they both have the exact same mods (HD-2 Filter, DP muff cover, 20/1000 timing advance and base gasket delete).

The 044 has a KS jug and the squish was 20/1000 after the gasket delete. The 440 has a unmarked jug, and squish was 19/1000.

I think they would be very close to one another, would be interesting to see. Any hardwood log close to 18" (for the 20" bars) would be good.

Whatta ya think???

I would not pull that jug. ...runs too nice to pull it. Odds are we are going to find that it's stock and then the joke is on us.

Your saw dan...so do what ya want. ....but I would leave it.

I'll order a muffler to stick on there. And I'll mod a single one of my saws so it's as open as yours and see where that gets us.

Then we will run the whole thing again.
If you get everything ready for me, as in clean with holes you want cut and marked, I can Tig whatever you want on those mufflers and bring them back to Dan's with me on the 6th Matt. You can send me the deflectors you need. I do have some of Red's here if you don't have them, small medium and large. I can do one with each if you'd like.
