G'day all, seem to have inherited a 540xp, can anyone tell me what the options are with light mods? Will be using it as a chipper saw for cutting limbs/branches etc to fit through, needs a bit more poke but not full porting. Is a muff mod straightforward, base gasket delete etc? Cheers guys

Worst part on these top handles is getting them apart to do the work. Takes a bit even to get the muffler off...
I would check squish before tearing it down to gasket delete. It might be ok...

heard even a muffler mod on the 540xp requires disassembling the saw. I haven't seen one yet so don't know.

Using it today, no climber will use it so its now a chipper saw. I really can't stand it, though it has reasonable power once it's been started. Cold blooded slow to warm up pain in my butt...

If they eventually fix the cold blooded issues with the 540 it would be a great saw. Until then...

My first mod to a 540 would be to run it through the chipper and buy something else...Never had a saw that pissed me off as bad as one of those.

+1 on the chipper idea.lol It could well be the best advice and end the pain. I like some huskys but top handles have never been their forte.
