I remove the air injection plastic scoop and block up the hole on some of my Stihl saws. Ryan's filter assembly is leaking. No amount of grease of funky pre-filter will change that problem, it may make it slightly better but if something is not sealed, its not sealed. I'd rather air enter the airbox from the back of the saw than being sucked in by the cooling fan that draws heaps of air/dust from the front of the saw. The system kinda sucks IMO but it can be made better. It looks great in promo brochures but that's about it. When running saws for work tank after tank you don't want to be messing with grease and stuff, you just want a filter system that does its job.

I don't know why so many people seem to think you need to clean the air filter 15 times for every tank of fuel you burn.

Just because there's a lot of dust on the surface of the filter doesn't mean you need to immediately clean it. It still works.
Do you wash the tread of your tires every time you drive your car?
It reminds me of people who destroy guns by cleaning them far more often, and far more aggressively, than they need to be. Most match shooters never clean their match rimfire 22 rifles. And those guns shoot well for tens of thousands of rounds without being cleaned even once. Yet you get some idiot who thinks a 22 should be cleaned every time it's fired, and he'll ruin it – just by cleaning it – in a few years. Isn't there some kind of medicine for this kind of OCD?

Also, the more dust there is on the filter, the more effective that filter is.

Seat it and seal it to keep out the fines, sure. But then, just USE the damn thing and stop worrying about the stupid muffler bearings.

I'm not sure a filter packed up with fines works better because the wood dust enhances the filtering. You know these 90cc saws at WFO breathe more air in a matter of minutes than we humans do in a year. A dirty filter don't bother most, but an intake tract full of crud matters to some. Though wood dust is far less of a problem compared to sand & stuff.

I wish they made a decent looking max flo cover for the 461 more like the 661, love it on the 661, but’s it is sooooo ugly on the 461! Lol
I don’t cut a much a most of you guys so it isn’t as big of a problem for me, a couple of tanks and I blow them out and I don’t have an issue with the hd2, but again I don’t cut that much, or I am taking a couple saws and switch up so they don’t get crazy dirty

I think you're missing the point here.

In this case the filter is filtering but an unacceptable percentage is also getting around the filter and into the intake.
And this is further compounded by what seems to be a tendency of the saw to have a larger volume of stuff entering the airbox than is typical for other saws.

So whatever your threshold of tolerance is for the amount of accumulation on the filter, some saws are just dirtier and need more frequent attention, relatively speaking.

Just an improvement. Like buying a truck and updating the air filter and exhaust system! ;)

Your advocating modifying exhaust systems?

Few years back, I got pulled over by state patrol, he said my truck vibrated the over pass he was sitting on top of, as I went under it.

He asked if the exhaust on my truck had been modified from factory specs.

I pleaded the 5th.

That was not good enough for him. He wrote me a citation for, disturbing the peace, and he wrote me a 10 day compliance citation, that my truck had to be inspected, by the state dept of transportation, to see if the exhaust system had been modified from factory specs.

I said, I was not aware the state had inspections.

He said they don't have safety inspections you are correct, but modifying the exhaust on a truck, is a federal offense.

Few days later I was at, dept of transportation, they found that my trucks exhaust had been modified from stock specs. I was given 14 days to put it back to stock, or they were going to impound it.

Well.... What the heck did you do to the exhaust system? Open pipe? Or a slight modification?

Well, I've never seen an HD2 filter come WITHOUT the prefilter. So there!

You sure the genius who's installing your filters isn't also trashing the prefilters as "packing material"?

what part number are you using to get the whole kit?

Dodge cummins, I had taken the muffler & resonator off, and put a straight pipe on. To comply with the citation, I put it back to stock, then a few weeks later, put the straight pipe back on. I was just easier on the skinny pedal from then on....

I'd bet a very large percentage (50-60% maybe) of diesel pickups on the road have had the exhaust modified in some way from stock...don't see them all pulled over getting citations.

No worries, I'm used to it....
