Few years back, I got pulled over by state patrol, he said my truck vibrated the over pass he was sitting on top of, as I went under it.

He asked if the exhaust on my truck had been modified from factory specs.

I pleaded the 5th.

That was not good enough for him. He wrote me a citation for, disturbing the peace, and he wrote me a 10 day compliance citation, that my truck had to be inspected, by the state dept of transportation, to see if the exhaust system had been modified from factory specs.

I said, I was not aware the state had inspections.

He said they don't have safety inspections you are correct, but modifying the exhaust on a truck, is a federal offense.

Few days later I was at, dept of transportation, they found that my trucks exhaust had been modified from stock specs. I was given 14 days to put it back to stock, or they were going to impound it.

That is your local state law, and there are fully legal exhaust system for a lot of states, but the manufacturer has to get a certification to make it legal, home made mods don’t work. Be careful to not get pulled over now, now that you have been warned they may not give you any grace, pleading the 5 doesn’t cut it if you know your doing something illegal....

Dodge cummins, I had taken the muffler & resonator off, and put a straight pipe on. To comply with the citation, I put it back to stock, then a few weeks later, put the straight pipe back on. I was just easier on the skinny pedal from then on....

I'd bet a very large percentage (50-60% maybe) of diesel pickups on the road have had the exhaust modified in some way from stock...don't see them all pulled over getting citations.

No worries, I'm used to it....

Straight pipes make lots of noise. You gotta be smart about it. Don't attract lots of attention, or attention you will get.

AND for the record, I believe LE and FD personnel are exempt from that law. At least up here where I am is.

Is you put grease around the edges of the seal and around the nut you would have a better test of the filter media, worth a try
