When hand filing, is it best to push the file away from the bar or toward the bar.
That might not be clear.
Push the file from the front (pointy end) to the back or from the back of the tooth toward the front.
I generally file the chain on the saw unless I've rocked it. Then I'll use the chain grinder. (Harbor Freight). But I'll only grind the top plate then hand file the gullet. The file I like to use is the Stihl file. The one that does the tooth and the raker at the same time.

You can do it either way Steve.
Easier on the file to go back to front on the tooth, but filing into the cutter really cleans up the chrome layer.
