Looked in an old Motors Auto Repair manual.

That anchor post varies from an eccentric to a vertical slot depending on which flavor the auto maker preferred.

Just remove it and study how they intended the shoe assembly to be centered.

Thanks for the info. The post on mine is actually part of the "backplate". The inside radius of the top of the shoes fits snug onto it. Theres one hole for the threaded pin that anchors the parkin brake. It runs through the center of that large post. So far, I'm not seeing any area that can be adjusted except the star adjuster. I'm beginning to think that these Autozone brand shoes are not spec. That inside radius on them that fits snug against the post? I'm thinking of hogging it out a tiny bit to let the shoes close further.

I just remembered something else to check.
On the backing plate there are 3 raised sections that each shoe rests on. They are famous for getting a groove in them from years of previous brake shoes wearing on them. Those grooves could also be causing problems. If so, take a hand grinder to smooth them back down a bit. You can also lightly grease those points, too.

You just said the problem. Auto Zone
Maybe only me but have never had any success with them.
Good chance it is the wrong part

Yep, I looked at some other parts stores. Autozone and O'Reillys both use the part number "358". However, on close inspection, the O'Reilly shoe is a bit shorter. I haven't got anything done on it the last couple days but I'll have the Autozone shoes off and the O'Reilly shoes on in the morning. Fingers crossed and thanks to all for the help.

Not sure how this works. Do they send me the Kool Aid every month or is that like a seperate subscription kinda thing?
I think there is a box to check on the registration card for the KoolAid subscription. At least there was on my last Stihl purchase.

Evening all!! Just finished up 2,237 aces of beans and milo at 28-45/acre, with the neighbors, plus working, plus a few home remodel finishes to facilitate a re-appraisal/home improvement loan for a shop. 98 hours in the last 2.5 weeks, and was partially doing it on the side... Needless to say, I ain't been around for a bit!

How are things?
