A lot of the Black Oak died off up around these parts in the 2012 drought. They tend to rot on the stump pretty quickly so you need to get after them within a year or two of dying. I burn up a bunch of them.

Last part of the potty story,
The little guy was looking at the stool
Today, his aunt told him there was a rock
Way down the hole, he said he would
Go on it like yesterday. .... she helped
Him call to tell me he is a big boy now :)
And need the baby potty. ....
I guess next I'll take him fishing

OK I will bite.....what is Black Jack?

Some refer to them as Blackjack, sometimes just Black Oak.
Just another Oak in the long list of Oaks that are out there.
Blacks are rather dense and tend to be very "sour" smelling..

Very dense oak, great BTU value but tough on chains. I've cut some where you could literally watch sparks fly from the chain because of the dense grain and the way it holds dirt and sand blown around it. Several people in these parts prefer it to all others if they have an indoor wood stove.

I've never found it in the firewood BTU chart, but I can tell you it's at least as heavy (green or seasoned) as white oak and close to post oak. Good stuff.

I didn't know they were red oaks - I thought it was just too minor of a species to make the chart.

There are like 200 species of oaks..
I lump them all into red, white, and burr..

And if it's up to me - just give me the red oak. Lots of 16" to 24" diameter red oak and a good splitting maul make me mighty happy. I really enjoyed busting those rounds today. I saved some for the boys.

Been a good day here too. Dropped a decent "blackjack" oak, bucked it and loaded it with another nice sized pin oak I dropped and bucked yesterday, plus 2 more very small hickory's. 1 1/2 trailer loads of primo oak is a success for me. Did this with Paul Shook and my youngest, Isaac. Isaac got to drive the Kubota, that I have on loan. Had lunch with Isaac and hung out with him. He told me today was fun and he had a great time,,,mission accomplished. I know it was getting to drive the Kubota that he liked but I am good with that.

I've got a pair in my back yard you wouldn't know we're Oaks by the leaves. But they have acorns. Barrels full. Got them from the Conservation Dept years ago.

Good morning folks. Was looking at the calendar trying to figure out a date. How does the 26th of March sound?
I'm on call for work then.
Oh well, can't make all of them.
