They claim we have Pignut, Mockernut & Shagbark here.

The Shag is the only one I see growing with any regularity & I only have limited access to them.

The only time my main guy uses oak is to cook turkeys around Thanksgiving.

Hickory is very prolific around here, but no shagbark.

I've found white oak to be a reasonable substitute for Mesquite. I'm just swimming in Oak & Hickory here. About 6 variations of each.
White oak is my favorite of all of them.

Also rare as hens teeth around here.

But I do have a stash of it.

Been cleaning up some of the field for fire wood lately. Cherry and persimmon mixed together smell great in the wood stove. I think the combination makes the cherry sweeter smelling. Need to figure out a way to chip it with what I have around here for smoking. Drying the pecan chips I picked up from the splitting day for smoking wood.
I've had pretty good luck making 1"-1.5" wide cookies of woods that I want to use with my charcoal grill for smoking.
Cut cookies, let dry, and trim to size with a hatchet when ya just have to beat on something.

Locally I have Oak, Apple and limited Hickory. I have to buy cherry and pecan.
I wish I had some Pecan logs, but it isn't very common near me.

My go-to are Pecan mixed with red-oak it's better flavor than hickory IMO ( and preferably the colored core wood) and/or apple or the cherry depending on what I'm grilling.

Hope this helps with all that spare time you have with farming.
As you may have noticed from time to time I usually MAKE extra time for good food and better coffee's.

@Hedgerow look out if he sees how it is now his creativity may lead him to how to bust it again, 😆 lol
I don't need to commit espionage to break it. I just need to get in the vicinity once it's fixed. I think I was standing near the thing the last 2 times it broke. Should I feel bad about it?

Oops....that kinda sucks.
The old truck is pretty rough. But, he has put a lot of work into it. Needs rockers and cab corners. But he thought the frame was pretty solid.....and it was, except for a section right beside the fuel tank. We'll fix it....it ain't too bad.

Good morning folks. We'll seem to be having a very mild holiday season, which should make it much safer for all those that are traveling.
Oh yea, coffee's good, and the weather report too, 28f to 32f and maybe a spritzing of moistures near daybreak.

So happy holiday's Mid-west crew, and I hope all those that have been missing are doing well.
If ya haven't seen some of those members lately, and you have there direct contact information's, Please give them a call. I thinking of one from Iowa as I'm typing this.
I'm sure it would add a bright spot hearing from some of this crew.

46° and maybe some rain today according to the guessers. Gotta get started on getting ready for the day. Use to be they would throw a fit if we showed up unshaven since it was part of the dress code. Now nothing is said, I guess they are happy that some of the workers just show up. After this one, the plan is for me to only participate in 4 more Christmas seasons. Burn through my vacations in Jan and Feb and be done by March 2029. One driver I know is retiring in the next few months and possibly another at the end of summer.

It's been 20°f as I slept but it's doubled to 40 f now and they hope to have 9 or 10 more degree things added on this afternoon,. Right range in my opinion

How hard is it to get on as a driver at UPS?

Most of the UPS drivers that deliver to us have grown a beard. Todd (great guy) has had to have surgery on both knees over the last couple of years.....and is close to being able to retire. Bouncing in and out of that truck all day ain't no easy job.

My brother has been carrying mail for most of his career. His doctor has determined he suffers stress from his job. So he takes 2 days a week off per docs orders. Which works out well. Vacation time accumulation is paid on retirement, sick time dissapears. Next year or whenever it works out, he will be carrying mail only 2 days a week. This is due to the stress of postal stuff.
Another thing about postal work code is that even days using sick time more sick time is added as is vacation time. So he's looking forward to a large pay out on retirement since he doesn't get sick in the usual ways and after a lot of time more vacation. So time per day is added (just hours per)
So those weeks of vacation time will add a bonus as he leaves.
Do admire my younger brother's planing within the rules

These guys were made to be clean shaven so long that they are enjoying not having to shave every day.

Communicated with him a week or so ago, He is still battling his leg & not getting around well at all.

He was really wanting to go deer hunting, said he was working with the dnr trying to get special hunting permit.

Has some procedures coming up after the first of the year that will hopefully help him out significantly.

Hopefully he will check in before the end of the year.
