I've been contemplating a potential upgrade in sawmills..

LT35 vs the LT40

discuss....
Other than max log capacity, I'd say go with the lt35.....it'll be way better than what you have now.
I believe the main deck frame on the 35 is the same as the lt40, and it has the same hydraulics, (I think).
For a one man operation the most important thing is the hydraulics, imo.

If what you want is for your sawing to be more efficient and less laborious, the 35 will do very nicely......on the other hand, if an additional eight grand is not a big deal for you, then just buy the lt40.

For what I do, (if I could afford to upgrade) I'd but the lt40..... though an lt35 would be a big improvement in almost every way over my current lt40 non-hydraulic.

I don't know what engine your current mill has....mine has the 25hp Kohler and I have no complaints, it's got right around 1,500 hours on it and I've done nothing but oil/filter changes and a couple $25 fuel pump replacements.

I wouldn't spend money on more horse power over the standard 25hp, that's pretty much just for commercial/production sawing where you are pushing it hard for 8 hrs a day 5 days a week.

The end.

The main difference between the 35 and 40 is about 6" of cutting width isn't it? Options for things like a debarker may be better on the 40 as well.
I would think that the larger size would be a better investment, unless you are looking at it as a stepping stone to getting to the larger mill. Then the 35 may be a good step until you find the deal you want on the larger one.

I tend to wait and save till I can buy the one I really want. When I get in a hurry and get anything less, then I end up regretting it.
No hurry here..

Nor is the purchase price..

Just want a machine that is effective for a one man band such as myself.. the LT 70 is what I like, but I’m not willing to spend $86,000.00 on it.

I currently have the 25 hp Kohler on the LT15.

And after looking at the specs on the new 35 vs the new 40, I’m trying to figure out a reason to get the 40..

Nobody wants to mess with 36” logs.. I can right now, but it’s horrible...

I got no hydraulics..

Big logs = bad day, as far as I'm concerned.....
All trees should be between 12" and 28" in my opinion.

There are a few of those around here, the folks that have them really seem to like them. The only experience I have with one is an auger tractor.

Most of them around here seem to have front loaders on them.
Yes that’s what I’ve seen also they usually have a loader. What little I have gotten to run this is pretty slick. Just about the perfect size and weight to do what I wanted and be easy to haul down the road.

4 me it has always been; how soon does it pay for itself? Some of that payback is ease of operation not just $. Got a 50" cannon bar that convinced me a 60" wood be good. Each have served me when nothing else could get the job done. I got a forester 72" bar " just in case" hasn't been used YeT. Couldn't justify cost of a cannon that size.
For my use a bs mill was/is too much. But a nearly unused ported 661filled in above the 046 and ms 460 with muff mod & better air fillter for an alaskan

I only see the WIDE option for the LT40 anymore and no WIDE option for the LT35. So I guess it comes down to how many 26" or wider cuts you plan to make.

BTW my old '98 LT30 does 28" wide cuts and can whittle down a 36" log.

Yep, I've cut up to 42" on my 36" lt40....just gotta try a lot harder. IMG_20221027_135149.jpgIMG_20221027_135409.jpgIMG_20221027_140932.jpgIMG_20221027_141435.jpg
.

Imo, it stinks if they went to wide head only on the lt40, there's really no point in that for 98% of what most people cut....but what do I know...
