They have you use the M-1?
Or were they using 5.56 already back then?
I'm not sure but I think, with countryhog being a Marine back then, it would have been an M14.
I could very well be wrong though considering I've never been in the armed forces.

However, my daughter was Army Reserve.
An MP. She can't stand the M16. Her favorite is the Beretta model 92. That's what she trained on.

Thank you for your service.

All issued military M14 are/were chambered in 7.62X51 NATO

99% chance you were issued M80 Ball which is 147grain projectile.

Later civilian semi auto M14 style can be had/built in a variety of cartridges that use the parent T-65 case. IE .260 REM, 6.5 Creedmore, 7-08 etc.

Respectfully,

Chet

Here’s an example of what an idiot can do to a nice old saw. Apparently, it all started with a 1/4-20 screw that came loose on the felling spike. It went all downhill from there.

But wait. He wouldn’t have drilled all the way through the crankcase bolt cavity into the oil tank? Well yes,........ yes, he did!

I got the critter back out and started looking things over. I decided to put some gun oil in a few choice spots. Seems to have helped quite a bit. I have no doubt that at least 50% of the problem is me, though. After lubing things up
And cycling the trigger a bunch (not really sure if you're supposed to do that) and getting my trigger finger better positioned so as to squeeze it better it seems to let off a lot easier. I have a bad problem of while I'm squeezing I'm anticipating the gun going off. This thing kicks harder than anything I've shot before.
I'm thinking I need some educating on this gun.
Steve, it won't kick like a 45/70 built on a 98 Mauser action. Owner had it loaded max. You know I'm husky. First shot was all needed. Had a medium resist/squish shoulder pad between my shoulder and the stock. 350 grain projectile from a bench, leaned down low. Touched the powder off and from leaned down to sitting straight up! Just a stout push!!
Shorter recommendation, find a shoulder pad that eases the felt recoil, or add more weight between the hand holds. Another is to find a gunsmith who can machine, out on the barrel, near the very end openings that send gas back at an angle toward back. Those are the assists I recall now.
Good luck young man

I've been kind of looking around for a recoil pad.

Something the size of my bedroom pillow.

Army silhouette is some oversize IIRC. Like a Chet plus.

Two side by side on the M16 qualification range. Two rounds burst. Tracers was the ammunition supplied.

One could see the first round go thru the left target and the second round thru the right hand.

Tracers made scoring easy for the firing point NCOIC.
