A long time ago I cut down a black gum on my Uncle's farm for firewood. Didn't know anything about black gum. He just said "Its hard to split". He wasn't kidding either.
Back then I split everything with an axe, splitting hammer and wedges.
This tree trunk was about 14 inches, best I recall. The first round I buried 2 wedges. All the way in. They stayed that way until the following summer. Nasty, twisted, stringy is a mild description. Not sure about sweet gum, but black gum is horrible.

Jim's splitter makes a mess with the FOP pine. He has taken to cut it to fit his OWB. Lots of noodling.

Sweet gum? Isn't that stuff near impossible to split? I had heard it wasn't any good for firewood. Maybe I heard wrong...

Yes sweet gum is tough to split, near impossible by hand. I have had elm and sycamore that is worse to split. A lot depends on the tree. It is probably not the greatest firewood for heating, but sufficient for an open fireplace IMO. Most of my firewood customers just burn firewood in an open fireplace. I separate the hardwoods for my customers that actually heat with wood. Currently, my mixed stacks have elm (red and white), hackberry, silver maple, ash, yellow pine, sweet gum, and birch. I have had sycamore and soapberry in the past also. Can't think of anymore at the moment. The only wood I have turned down is willow and catalpa. I personally have a fireplace only and burn anything. I now save all the good stuff for the customers.

I guess I was the last to fall and the first to rise. Good morning everybody. Have as good a Monday as possible, Friday will be here before you know it.

Yeah, this is my first full week back to work, so I'm sure it'll be fun. Last night, I was trying to piece together a basketcase 024 I've got. I just need little random bits and pieces. Everything should be on order now. Not sure what I'm gonna do with it. The cylinder is one I practiced porting on, but I really can't remember what numbers I used or anything. The exhaust port is really shiny though, lol. Heck I may have just started grinding without even looking at numbers.

Have a great day everybody!

Morning Thomas! Catalpa is great carving wood but a little harder to find any good logs. If you ever get the chance grab it and I will take it off of your hands........

I've got a black gum in the front yard that I planted several years ago for the fall colors. Has brilliant scarlet red leaves when the turn. Very slow grower though.
The home that I grew up in had two catalpa's in the front yard. They had beautiful flowers followed by a mess in the yard when they dropped off. Last time that I went by, one had died and the other is a monster.

Yes, catalpa's are beautiful when in bloom. Last year they all had just bloomed in town then those maniac thunder storms pounded the flowers into oblivion. Hopefully we will get to enjoy them a little longer this year.

I actually thought of you when I was offered Catalpa last week. You have made this request in the past. I don't have the equipment to load a large trunk or I would have got it for you. I will be more persistent in the future.

No worries...and don't hurt yourself for my sake. I can use anything from 8-10" and up diameter for carving. Doesn't have to be super long either. 3-4' in most cases.
