It's not snowing at the moment here, but we did get a skiff of snow overnight. Now we got, 16 degrees, with a 25 mph north wind, and a -3 feels like temp. Days like this make me glad I work inside.

Red elm I find in the woods here now is only getting 4-6" in diameter and it's dead! Very few live healthy ones.

Is it rare due to some kind of disease or is it just our MO/KS climate and soil conditions?

I think it's disease! 40 or so years ago it about killed all of them. Kind of dating myself here but ever since then they just haven't really came back!
Burns hot as hedge and usually slips it's bark when dead so it's alot cleaner. Doesn't spark and few ashes. Splits like a mutha tho!
