Years ago I was cutting the grass at my Grandmothers farm with my rider. She had one tree in her yard with low hanging branches. As I was going under them, I had to lean way back in the seat to clear the branch's. I looked up, and about 12 inches from my nose was a hornets nest a little smaller than a basketball. They were starting to get angry. I walked to her tool shed, got a rake, wrapped an old rag around the tines, soaked it with diesel and went back to the tree. Lit the rags and held it under the nest. I was no further than 4 feet from that inferno. Those little *b-word* were popping like firecrackers as they came out of the nest.
Never got stung once.
Another time, I found one down in the pasture. I filled it full of holes from about 60 yards with a 22 magnum.
:)
I've heard stories of shooting one with a 22 and b4 you could take you eye off the scope they had followed the bullet back to the rifle and stung him in the forehead.

Hornet’s nest about basket ball size:
September ‘69, our platoon was assigned to the tank battalion running patrols and ambushes along highway 19 Ahn Kea area.

We were riding on top of M48 just plowing thru heavy brush when we struck down a small tree with a hornets nest. [emoji90]

Tank crew dropped down and closed their hatches while us grunts fended for ourselves.

Floyd Burch, a brother from Baltimore, was next to me wearing his ‘boonie’ hat. I had on my steel pot. I grabbed his hat and used it to swat hornets while the driver backed us the hell out of there. My left arm going like a windmill.

Floyd had one sting on his arm and I went unscathed. I had knocked several off his back.[emoji106]

Another on Floyd.

We were changing into clean fatigues one day and I happened to notice Floyd’s feet.
“Floyd, how did you get in the infantry with flat feet?”

Floyd looked down an said:
“ I had arches when I got over here.” [emoji90]

They were flat as a pancake. [emoji2960]

Holy cow! [emoji15]

We have stayed there a couple times. Washed baby Brodie in the kitchen sink.

Outstanding place.

Good morning fellas! One day closer to fall!
Here in the bottoms, leaves that turned yellow over night fall from the slightest breeze, BW ya know. Tho down in the creek red leaves dot the inner canopy overhead. And the surface has a few brown & green, or other colored leaves floating along.
Prepping for some long distance milling tomorrow. Gotta check my list twice since at best the trip is close to 2 1/2 hrs. one way. 111" circumference, last time on a pecan his diameter was 5" oversize of actual IIRC, better guess on circumference. Sycamore this time. I hope he gets a catalpa some time. Better carving wood than bass because it holds better detail. Randolph has a 50' specimen near his house that he wants to keep. I'd still like a large branch blow off into the yard. Few $ there I'm hoping sometime.
