Some are, and some planted an early variety to be out by Sept 1 for dove hunting.
I don't know, just saw several empty fields, and they were greasing up to run this morning between Poplar Bluff and Dexter.
Plus all the tags and licences and now you have to use steel shot.
It's a national holiday round here. And they unusually only do smaller fields like that around 25-200 acres. Depending on the farmer.

Slow year where we were about 265 birds altogether. Most years are 500-900 birds total.
I remember, when I was on a wheat harvest crew in 1976, we were cutting 1 field of wheat (the first time I've run a combine) just over the Oklahoma line. A 200 acre field. It dawned on me that this one field, this farmer owned, was bigger than my Grandparents entire farm. (80 acres). They had 1 hay field behind the barn that was 5 acres. They'd get about 200 bales each cutting. 2 cuttings a year.
We all do. And we breast them out on the bone then soak in ice water then filet the meat off the breast bone. No feathers to deal with by that point.
