It's an '03 with the ALH engine and the 5spd manual. I change the oil every 10K also with Shaeffers, and usually run either Stanadyne or Power Service in it for the additional lubricity that was removed with the change to ULSD... It has 205K on the clock right now and will probably need it's first clutch in the next 30K or so. I may end up doing injector tips and a few other little mods to it, to make it a bit more survivable in the urban scrabble. Right now combined average is 43-45mpg, hand calculated and that's City, Highway, A/C on/off, cruise and not, idling to 80+mph... If I keep it a 55-65 I can actually break 50mpg, but I normally don't have that kind of patience... Fuel filter also gets done every oil change because I don't want to buy a new injection pump ANYTIME soon... The radio needs replaced and the headliner is falling down, but I'll get those addressed. I plan to hit at least 400K with this car.

I've thought about an old IDI, IF I could find one in good shape (including someone who knew how to check the antifreeze properly to avoid a cavitated block)as the low-end torque is phenomenal for a pasture/farm truck and they're stone simple to maintain. With the Hypermax or Banks kits, they're ok on the highway too. BUT, if I get a newer truck than my current 350, it will be a 4500 or 5500 Ram with the Aisin transmission. I may still eventually put a 6.7 Cummins in my '05 F-350 though and have a nearly perfect truck.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion I guess. mine vastly differs from yours. If you wanted a perfect truck you’d just put DT466 in it, Cummins are vastly overrated. IDI’s aren’t really a torque monster by any means but that truck with the turbo kit was considerably better than anything else produced in 93. I’d like to find a 96-03 7.3 regular cab to replace it.

Mine has the upgraded single mass clutch kit in it. Does urs still have the dual mass flywheel?

No, Mine is still dual mass and I haven't decided one way or another on that, though I will go with a stronger clutch when I do it. I did get a 20-25hp program when I had my intake manifold cleaned, timing belt, water pump and pulleys done. It felt like a whole new car after that, but I bought it with 165K with a mostly plugged intake tract...

On the IDI note, The ones that I played with before may have all been 4:11 rears, I'm not sure, but they always seemed to have good grunt down low.

I'd def upgrade to the single mass. I've seen some probs out of the dual mass. What Tuner did you go with? And I believe I've still got a programmer that'll fit yours it's for an 03 wont fit my 04. I'm gonna do all that service on my next 7day break early dec. Should be interesting.

The idea of a diesel car is interesting, but I just can’t get it to math out..
I drive 120 miles a day work round trip.
Cheap gasser gets 38mpg.
Just sold it to my nephew with 297,000 miles on it.
Gas is 2.39 a gallon and diesel is over 3.??

Got another gasser. A Japanese one this time.
We’ll see how many miles it’ll run before I scrap it.

I had my jetta since 07. Overall maintenance and fuel costs, I guarantee that I have come out ahead but I am doing all my own work. Dealer cost on timing belt is $1200. $300 in parts and a long morning and I have it done.

I think it was Malone, but it was a stand-alone flash and I don't have a tuner for it (yet). I will install a pyrometer at some point as I like having them on my trucks and if I play with nozzles, turbo, etc, I want to ensure that I don't melt pistons in the process. Realistically, another 60-80WHP would make that an entirely different car to live with, while commuting. I may eventually modify the exhaust, but I don't think I want to straight-pipe it, as though they sound nice, I'm told that the smaller turbo on those needs a bit of back pressure to avoid turbo surge during rapid de-fueling.

I am more impressed with 297,000 miles than 38mpg. 297K can't be very common.
Here is mine Thomas, 98 S10 90 miles per day, second clutch. Pulls 20mpg on average and id drive it to Matt's.

At this point, I'd be happy with a truck that wasn't about to fall into a heap! How much longer you think my 92 will hang together?

How bad are the spring mounts? That’d be what I’d most worry about. Body panels are just cosmetic

My 94 K1500 had to have the spring mounts replaced at 220000. And the body mounts rusted out letting the cab sag preventing me from engaging 4×4. So I jacked the cab up and welded a piece of channel to the frame to hold it in place.

We've got a lady that travels daily for her job that got 485,000 miles on her Cruze before someone T-boned it. I'm not sure how many miles she's got on her new Cruze. She's in every two weeks for an oil and filter change.

How well do you like that BEW?
Fun little car. Had a bad transmission but the timing belt had already been done. Got less than $4500 in it doing the work myself and it gets about 41 mpg. Dad has a 06 golf with the bew. It takes me a bit to remember the difference with the sound of the engines when I first get in them since I normally drive the jetta.

The last clean 1997 reg cab 350 I looked at, fella wanted 22,000 for it.. and he wasn’t budging..

Had 70,xxx miles on it. Guess his dad bought it to haul a camper. Kept it inside.
