Most of them have brakes on both axles now due to changing NHTSA requirements.

Mine does not have brakes (about 10 years old). Not having brakes has never been an issue, but I wish it had them anyway.

A bunch of the farmers around here with GMs, who don't want to F-word with diesels, run 6.0 Vortecs. They like the fuel and need a bit more gearing to mostly keep up with a diesel, but the mediocre mileage can be off-set quickly by the upkeep costs of the newer diesels. And, if semi-taken care of (oil, filters, spark plugs) can last a long time and a lot of hard miles. The neighbors main feed truck has about 260K on it now and runs like a raped ape. Gets 9 mpg, but it's a dually with a feeder box and a spike bed and somewhere between 4:10 and 4:30 gears.

OK, next step is a toolbox setup for the trailer. I've pretty much decided on a 4 foot and a 3 foot underbody truck box combo. Got the idea at Tractor Supply the other day. WOuld fit perfectly. My question: Is the one below good and tough enough to be durable and secure, or should I spend more nad get the one from Northern? Links below. There are a bunch of others out there as well. I want to try to get it right the first time.

Either ought to work, though I'd look around a bit more as good hinges and latches are worth their weight in gold. *IF* you're going to do one or more under-bed boxes, I would spend the time to sand them down a bit and either have the Rhino-lined or at the least the roll-on do it yourself stuff. My best friend and I did a roll on his (later my) '97 F-150. That bed saw hell, but it held up pretty well. Anything under bed, subject to the sand blasting of road debris from the vehicle and trailer tires, puddles, possible fresh asphalt, and other assorted horrors of the road will GREATLY benefit from it and last much longer. in this case, an ounce of prevention is worth a few pounds of cure. Just my experience.

I think these are made for mounting under the bed of a flatbed truck.
