I don't think he'll be offended if you put a few dollars in his pocket 😉👍

For now I decided to put it together as it is and keep it in the display. If I can find a good source for those seals I will acquire a few and get this saw back into working order. For now, it looks pretty good. We pulled that John Deere label off the damaged AF cover and put it on this one that came off the saw that donated the piston and cylinder for this project.

I did practice restoring the faded plastic from the damaged AF cover that came off the saw. Amazing what a little time with a heat gun will do.

That's an awesome John Deere, albeit a bit rough, I'm still looking for one. Generally the few I do are are always near mint.

I was about to ask how you improved the AF cover. That came out pretty nice!

I would like to find a spline type clutch drum, or a new of very good .325-8T spur drum to finish this one off. Starts, runs, idles, oils perfectly.

Seals for the John Deere Super XL

-F/W Seal:12282A (OLD # 58688A). SKF 6119 double lip. SKF 6120 single lip. National 253747
-PTO Side Seal for saws with the auto oiler drivecase with the fill up by the handlebar bracket: 58308B.07021.

The 58308 seal is getting difficult to find but quite a few on the Homelite forum (Leon's) are using

This seal will be tight on the shaft but there have been no alternatives that I could find.

"58308" seals from LRB arrived this week. They are really 5/8x15/16 like 0609318TC that Tim noted but I was able to get the one installed on the PTO side relatively easily.

I used a screwdriver with a small notch to get under the lip and hook the metal body, then a tap with the hammer to pop it out.

20260131_141125.jpg

It took a little work to get the lip over the step in the crankshaft, but I was able to get it on without popping off the spring. It also took a little effort to get the body of the seal pressed into the bore but some careful persuasion with a hammer and a deep socket the seal went in.

This is the old seal, as you can see it is a tight spot to work in down in the crankcase.

I also received the spark plug cover this week so that saw is now finished and ready for the display. It starts, runs, idles, oils, in short it does everything it is supposed to to.

That is sweet! I’m so frickin old, I remember seeing them on the shelves at the local Deere dealer. I had a red version from the Homelite dealer 5 miles away. This was before the “One of Each” sickness enveloped me…

Some of the Homelites have that crankshaft step near the case make it a pain to get the seal over the step.

I wrap the shaft above the step with electrical tape even with the step diameter to make it much easier to get the seal on.

I bought some cheap very thin wall heat shrink from Amazon and I use it for all my seal installations, I use my heat gun to shrink it just below the last step and or key slot, just slit cut it off after. Don’t use the good stuff because the good stuff has a water proofing glue sealant.

Anyone interested in this little pile of new old stock stuff I've had under a workbench for years?? It's free. I just hate to throw it away. First person to pm me their address and I'll get it sent out tomorrow.

I bought this in the UK last year and Sugar Creek quickly made the decals for it. Husher muffler and auto oiler only. Manual oiler hole isn't threaded and neither is the oil line at the bottom. Made from about 1967-1970ish in Canada by Terry Industries, and this model was made for export to Europe.

That model has a lot of power. The most of any in that frame.
I'm pretty stoked about finding it. The P/C look great through the exhaust as well. I'm in the middle of another old saw right now though, so not sure when I'll get to it. It's missing the A/F cover, the muffler cover and the back shroud. I'll start gathering parts for it now though. I also got a Mac Super 44A, and a Pioneer P42 as part of this deal. It was a good day!
