I can't help with ID, but it has the "Super Screamer" muffler. Those are good for annoying your neighbors (if you have any).

Looks like it might be a Super XL-12, at least according to Joyce's sales records, there were a few other 8 digit serial numbers which started with 4453 which were also XL-12s. It would be from around 1977. Its possible that it has both the automatic and manual oiler on it, my Super XL does.


Do you have a plate under the on/off switch? Some do, some don't.




The XL-12s had both the red/black and the blue/white, I think the red/black were from the mid to late 70s. My blue super XL is from 1967/68. I would wager that you have all original parts, at least on the outside, can't speak for whats under the hood. Have you gotten it to run yet? I love the sound of mine while it is idling...goes....pop...pop...pop...pop...pop...pop like an old hot rod!!

It does run very well ,I thought it might be a Super because 6119 seals fit in both sides of the crankshaft. The Automatic oiler was the only thing I was wondering about? I might have a pin hole in a copper line ? Or it didn't have one and the UT / lot # isn't familiar to me.

the UT / lot # isn't familiar to me.

House of Homelite forums has a lot of information on serial numbers and UT numbers. It is mostly information collected by people and pooled into one spot.
House of Homelite Serial Numbers and Dates - The first thread here is about the UT#, models and serial numbers. While you may not find yours, you can correlate pretty close if you find a close match.

I found the link to the document on House of Homelite, they deserve the thanks for pooling all of the information they have gathered so far. It was helpful to me to find the approximate year of my Homelite. From what it sounds like reading about Joyce and her husband, they were a great couple to know and work with, lots of detailed information from over the years, definitely a treasure trove of information. Looks like you were granted a part of that information there in your library section, I am sure lots of good information in there to see, both in the magazines and the workshop manuals!!

The Automatic oiler was the only thing I was wondering about?

The auto oiler version had the oil tank fill hole (and an adjuster) on the case above the bar plate (as opposed to the bottom fill of the manual versions) as illustrated below. (I believe I may actually have one or two.)
It also used a weird sized oil seal on the PTO side that isn't a commonly available size according to the pre-eminent 'bearings and seals list' that has been compiled over the years. Evidently substitutes have been tried with varying degrees of success, but that's a different conversation.

It's definitely an XL-12. The location of the oil fill hole is a dead give away. None of the XL-12's came with an auto oiler. Many parts on Homelites interchange like starter covers.

The pawn shop won't accept anything that won't run and they let you start it before you buy. I'm not itching to buy the saw, just thinking out loud.

I paid $65 for my 1967 Super XL at an antique store. The pull cord was hanging out and would not retract. I cleaned that up and it recoiled just fine. Added fuel and several pulls later it fired right up. At the time it was the most expensive saw I bought and well worth it.

NOS Homelite 5-30N, 7-29, 8-29, 20MCS, 26LCS Chainsaw Crankcase Gasket 71106 - $11.00

If it is just gasket material, once you get the size (ID/OD), you can probably just get a sheet and knock out your own with some punches.

Well, I bought a Super XL on eBay and the fellow sent me the wrong saw. He has told me to keep this one (for free) and has since shipped out the SXL I bought. Don’t know anything about it but it looks to be in good shape.
Not sure what I’ll do with it.

That sucks, I would be mad because this is too much like a top handle and I don't like top handles. If it was any other rear handle I would probably be ok with it. I guess you are not out much because it was free, except a little frustration.
