Hey good guys, my old man is starting to get into my saw modding. I brought his old 61 back to life for Christmas this year. Then today he ran my mildly ported and modded 51 and loved every minute of it. He has an old 272xp that's in need of a refresh. He mentioned having me do some minor port mods while its apart. At this time I don't have the means to mess with upper transfers. I found an old post on Another Site that listed this basic mod list as a great bang for your buck gain.

1) Dual Port Muffler Mod
2) Base Gasket Delete
3) Drill out carb to 3/4"
4) Raise Exhaust port 2mm and widen 1mm each side
5)Lower Intake port 2mm
6) Remove and plug decomp.

Do these sound like good suggestions or does anybody have anything to add ?

Thanks in Advance ! I love this place and the openness of the community.

I'm getting ready to cut one of these up. No machine work... Just grinding.

Ps.. I'll be waiting for answers as well... ;)

2 mm up and down too much. 1mm up 1mm down. Widen each 1mm maybe. You should check stock timing first

What about raising the transfers 1mm

Carb is probably fine stock.

Maybe try ignition advance 4-6 degrees. May not help but may work.

Thanks for the advise, I will be sure to check timing numbers before I do anything.

I would love to be able to do upper transfer work but can't justify a $300 right angle tool at this point in the game to do so.

I may give the carb a try and compare it, Definitive Dave has aftermarket carbs for around $12. I'm not out much if bore it just to see.

Their have been a lot of uppers worked on this style closed port cylinder done without a right angle. On the 272 you don't have to go to much to see good gains.
You talking about the stack of dremel cutoff wheels trick for, raising uppers ?

Also seems like a another popular mod on this type of cylinder is to smooth or "clip" the lower transfer.

I have done the abrasive cutter for years, I did finally break down but....

here is a tip for success, the cutter wants to run into your bore and chew up your beautiful plating. Use electrical tape on the stuff you don't want pecker tracks on.

just make sure to remove it before trying to run the saw :)

post lots of pics ask lots of questions.

if you are placing an order from Dave get a new ring at the very least piston may be ok but changing the ring is a given.

Thanks for the tip on the electrical tape ! I like that idea.

Yes, at minimum it will get a new caber ring, and a meteor piston if needed.
Waiting to tear down/vac pressure test before I place an order this time lol

So how many cut off wheels you stack and how you beveling the edges after?
I mark the transfers, cut a bit below the line with 1, then I add 1 more to grind up higher.

I grind fingers with a double cut burr. Once roughed in, I put 2 cutting wheels on and grind them to the diameter I want with a bench grinder. Then I finish with the 2 stack.

I bevel with a ball burr or ball diamond

I've been trying to find a longer length mandrel for cut off disks. The one I have is not long enough to keep the chuck out of the cylinder so I can't cut a flat exit. Anyone know of a source?

I use a flex shaft. It's not too bad. If you get lucky, the chuck is over the lower transfer port.
