I'm guessing this is what you are talking about? Looks pretty good, but I also now think the valve stem idea is a good one and I can get that locally.

I'm liking the valve stem theory as well. I had heard of folks doing that years ago, but had never seen it done. Would be a quick and painless solution to a lasting vent. Hit the hole area before the valve stem base is pulled through to seat, with some Permatex or RTV just for added measure, I don't see how you could go wrong going that route.

I like my yellow spout cans,

How's that new saw treating you?

View attachment 70155
The yellow spout cans as pictured is what I use the most. I have probably a dozen of them. Of the 20 or more fuel cans I have, not a single one is a "recent production" one. I supplement my supply with those from yard sales, estate sales, etc. The new style cans are dumb.
My two stroke cans are all the "wedge" shape and very clearly marked on all four sides and top. My non-ethanol fuel goes in cans that have a strip of green pvc tape on the handle. I don't use any metal cans for fuel anymore. I usually only put regular gas in 5 gallon cans anymore as the non-ethanol is readily available and I use the 2+ gallon cans for that. I like to have about 20 gallons of regular fuel in stock in case of a power outage of a duration that requires the generator.

I drill a 1/2 inch hole through all the safety crap in the neck of the spout an empty mix bottle as a cap.
A 4mm screw in top to vent.

The fact that the cans expand and contract with changing temps is a good thing, at least it indicates you have a good right seal. A tight seal helps keep the gas fresh and keeps water from the environment out(especially if using ethanol fuels). Just burp em when needed.

Are there any fuel cans out there that are any good? I absolutely hate the styles available today! The expand and contract and if you go to fill a saw and don't relieve the pressure look out! So has anyone found some good ones? What are you using? I left this one out over night and it got into the 40's!

These are a direct replacement, after you break the spring in the spout.
I picked up a few of these for my 2.5 and 5 gallon red gas cans. Drill the vent hole slightly smaller than 1/2".
NJ says the black spout is not compliant, but the white spout is.
Look at this on the Bay http://www.ebay.com/itm/222347409114

Great post.

I have never understood what is so hard about pushing a button on the No-Spill cans to release the pressure. Yet I have read people (not on OPE) complaining about, and hating them (the No-Spill cans) for that reason.

I too am a fan of the old yellow spout cans. Seems like the "spill proof" EPA cans end up making more of a mess than the old school can's we all grew up using. Never tried the no spill, looks like a well made can but I always catch a case of the "cheaps" every time I intend on buying one.

I've started to snag them up at any chance I get ( garage sales, flea markets etc.) usually for $2-$3. I recently picked up a NOS replacement spout and vent cap for 25 cents. I must be getting old clinging on to the old school gas cans.... just another thing to start hoarding:rolleyes:

Gotta vote for the older 2 gallon yellow spout and smaller 1 1/4 gallon white spout plastic containers for my 2-stroke stuff. Never had a problem with em. Only use 91 octane at 40:1 so don't have the moisture or separation issues inherent in ethanol mix.

Why no ethanol fuel in metal containers? I have an old school 5 gal metal can I've been using for my 4-stroke equipment that's still clean as a whistle after 40-45 years. My car and truck have metal tanks, too. :roto2nuse:

Been my experience that any container with ethanol fuel or mix is gonna suck moisture out of the air if not completely filled or sealed air tight. Separation worse in metal containers? Never noticed any issues with mine.

20170331_154734.jpgthe trick to getting a awesome nozzle when ya buy new fuel jugs is buy them at a place that also sells the blue 5 gal water jugs. The water jugs have sweet ass auto siphon old school nozzles on them. Swap the nozzles from said water jug onto yer fuel jug of choice and go check out.. taa daaaa!! Its like a magic show up in here :) here is a 1gal with the auto siphon water jug nozzle on it. I also have a 2.5 and two 5ers. Haha!! No epa crap for mee thanks!
