This is the dilemma. Any of these saws will easily do what you want. Eithe go cheap, or go 261 and at least share filing gear with the 661 (and have the strongest saw in the option list).

Yup so now I need to make nice with a Canadian Stihl dealer :eyepop: know any?

Honest question what bar mount does the 250 run? I thought it was small mount. Plus doesn't it have that annoying easy tension system on it.

Idk about bar, but if by annoying you mean the chainsaw tool/wrench and bar nuts..... that is what most of them have, you add more consonants if it does not have bar nuts. Something like MS251-CM

Nope meant this;

Couldn't remember if the 250 came with it or not. You don't want anything to do with it.
I know, that is what my last post answered...... they add a consonant (non-vowel letter) if it has that sheit on it. The saw (normal with bar nuts) is MS251-C with the cap you don't like it is something like MS251-CM

(It is optional)

I REALLY like the 661's can't loose-em bar nuts. =)

I fixed up a 180 once. I didn't even like it on that. I think that system must have been Italian talk about fragi-le. I converted that saw to 018 hardware.

My 241 has a captive bar nut. I love it cause i was always misplacing the bar nuts. As I understand it so does the 261.

As far as I know Rockjock over on AS has had these in his hands (works at a Canadian dealer). You might ask him for more details. There is quite a lengthy thread there about the new 261 & 362.

I wanted to head to my dealer to check them out today but ended up picking my wife up early and taking the family out for supper.

I emailed my dealer this morning and asked if he has the new 261cm's in stock and if he had the promo on them. He came back with $599 CDN plus taxes (about $480 U.S) and in stock but didn't confirm if they were the newer style or not. I may have to go down in person and have a look.

I kept intending to post this yesterday.

It is the 20" bar from my dead 391..... which I may be hearing news of tomorrow, for the first time in 8 months or so. Don't ask why it's been soo long. I apparently "burnt the thing up" within a month or two of buying it, but it was quasi under warranty so Stihl replaced the parts but didn't pay for the labor.... the labor is the snafu.

(But if you know someone who wants to buy a disassembled MS 391, let me know)

Did you have any luck at your dealer?

(mine does not stock either the 241 or the 261, he sells 250's to the city and the city just uses them for EVERYTHING until they blow up. Rinse and repeat)

And here is a question for the Mechanics. Does Canada have similar muffler nerfing due to government regulation, or if I bought a saw from there would it not need muffler modding?? (whether it be Stihl or Dolmar)

I haven't made it in yet. Friday my 3yr old spiked a fever at daycare and I had to pick him up instead of going to the dealer. I know he has 261's in stock for $599 CDN but I expect they are the Original Edition. I believe that all North American saws are built to the same standards, mufflers etc are likely the same. One thing I have heard suggested is buying a second muffler and modding that one. Then if it needs to go back to the dealer you can easily swap for the original one. That being said, if you are thinking of having @Mastermind port the saw for you your manufacturers warranty would be void. I do understand that Randy's reputation is better than any warranty a dealer offers.

Sorry to hear about your child.

What do you mean? that if the saw breaks after porting that Randy will repair it on his own dime (as long as it is not from neglect)?

You would have to ask others that have experienced it but it is my understanding that he stands behind his work to the enth degree.
