Takes me around 30 mins. What do y'all think about this. I just bought a older simington, prob paid to much, but was wanting to put more aggressive wheel on it to get all my rocked cutters close, without burning. Did I just waste my money? It's a older 450 and I'm pretty sure parts are no longer available.

That's about right, and you didn't waste your$$$. I also had an early model 450 Simington for a short time. It's a well built grinder, but didn't have the adjustable arm that the new model does,so I found it more difficult to dial in the angles that I wanted than the Silvey. Not sure if the new improved arm will work with the old 450 or not. Ultimately I sold it in favor of the R2. I saw little point in having two square grinders so I picked my favorite and sold the other one.

If you want I'll give you a fast material removing wheel-(dark brown). Honestly I didn't care for it. Leaves a pretty rough finish. It will remove material quickly without burning cutters easily. I really like the blue, salmon, and white (in that order), Doubt I'll ever use it so cover shipping and I'll send it to ya.

I'm of the same line of thinking as Mike mentioned above, where as if a chain is badly "rocked" I'll first take it back as needed with the round grinder, then switch to the square grinder to finish it.

Most of my customers bring me pretty rolled chain, 7 mins is impressive for someone just starting out. What are you cutting the rakers with?
Just to be completely honest here that time figure is a complete guess....As I stated that time I threw out there was also with one of my chains....you have to remember I am a VERY OCD about my chains....I sharpen my chains when the "average" guy would think it's still good to cut LOL!!!

I will say this my dad brought me some old chains to practice on(stihl RS 25" and let me keep them!!!)...... the working point had hit something for sure.... well I EASILY went around that chain 3-4 times on each cutter side.....also I did the rakers by hand!!!!..... yes it came our looking great, but hell i had 3-beers and and a hour in that one... !!!!!

So yes, with a complete rocked chain I would loose money if I valued my time at the grinder very high....I love messsing with chains, grinder, and filing. I figure if I can eventually make some money doing it, that would be great....if for the rest if my life I only do my chains and some friends and never make a dollar, I will be fine with that too...:beer-toast1:

I meant to ask you guys, I have a cheap harbor freight grinder(don't worry I didn't pay for it someone gave it to me!!).... would it be ok if I set it up to do rakers.....since I have been doin just my chains right now, I still do rakers by hand....I did set the biggest wheel up(I think for .404 chain), for the rakers and tried it once....I guess if I ground a bunch of chains it would be efficient to slap the raker wheel on and just do all the rakers at once!?!?!?

I also want to add that I REALLY appreciate all you guys answering my questions and helping such a "green" grinder out....I just really like working on the saws, an have really jumped into grinding head first....I really like it... as I told philbert, I always hand-filed and when I realized the capabilities of the grinder I was thrilled to say the least!!!

Anyway, thanks guys all the help means ALOT!!!!!

You sound like me. Lol. Have you tried the stihl usg?
No sir, I would love to, but only person I can imagine that would have one around me would be the dealer and he isn't the friendliest fellow....bad thing is I will probably love the damn thing and be wanting to buy one immediately...

Do you have a stihl USG...in your opinion do you think that it is head and toes above the Oregon models(511AX, 520), as far as performance.....

I've only used it once. I was going to take it to Randy's gtg , but completely forgot. Would have went along with 100' of stihl rs33.
So I don't have an opinion on it yet.

I have another question for you guys that have all these different grinders....have you guys had a lot of luck finding the silveys, nielsons, and simington in eBay or craigslist...I know when they pop up for a decent price on the "chainsaw sites" they are sold INSTANTLY....I know there was a set of silvey tools on eBay I probably should have bought... it was grinder, bar closer, bar grinder, chainsaw holder, chains breakers, and few others... it all sold for $900....

I am aware that I need to master this Oregon 520 before I possibly get another grinder, but I doubt I could pass up on a steal of a deal either (wow I guess CAD and GAD are alike in every way!!!)

I know this may be a hard question to answer, but I have to ask.... which round grinder would/do you guys use when you grind your personal chains....

Also what is your favorite style to grind if you know you are cutting hard wood????

I just bout a old simington, should get it this week. If your wanting a square grinder. Know what you want. And when you see it. Buy it. A guy at Randys gtg, had a simington. Looked easy to use and they're still in production.
I like square because I can grind them faster. Most chains you grind will be round. Or rolled, rocked or have been used as a tiller.
Also, you will need to keep chain in stock. To replace them as needed. Grinding is only a service you offer, hoping they buy other stuff.
There's still more to it. A sharp chain won't do it job with a badly worn bar, or a bar that is bent or twisted. So you mite wanna stock bars also. Or tools to fix them.

If you're needing a barshop, I have one I'll sell you. I only use it for sharpening mower blades. Would love to see it go to a good home.

Well yes, there is ALOT of stuff I would need to be a "shop".... I have started to work on and sell saws this past year.....for instance I had an old marine bring a ms180 in pieces.... I basically just had to put it back together, and charged him $20 out of respect.....if I would have had the grinder at the time, I know he would have had me grind his chains...

I am basically saying that I will build some business by word of mouth, slowly, and eventually....I think it is good that it will be slow so I can buy whatever tools I need as I go....

I have to remember that I am not in the middle of huge timber country here....I need to hook up with some tree company eventually....

I used to grind some for people. It can turn into work and rocked chains are no fun on a square grinder with a blue or salmon wheel. If I was going to do it again I'd get a round grinder with cbn wheel to knock the damage off and then square them
Hey what grinder do you prefer to use right now for your personal chains....

It's a "hard knock life" for chains. Your going to get some that look like they Been used for rototilling. If there too bad I am just up front with the customer and then they need a new chain and I'll order them a new one.
