@Philbert, hey I was reading a thread over on "AS", and I seen that you have a square grinder......how do you like it.... and what's your overall thoughts and opinions???

Do you tend to grind your personal chains square or round?????

I have a cheap harbor freight grinder... would it be ok if I set it up to do rakers.....?

No.

Not impossible to do, but they only take a skinny wheel.

.... which round grinder would/do you guys use when you grind your personal chains....
I use the Oregon style grinders and am happy with them. Certainly 'good enough'. Never used the Silvey (NLA) or STIHL ($$), so might change my mind, especially if I did it commercially. Would probably choose to have 3 Oregon grinders (one for each wheel) over one very expensive grinder, but keeping an open mind- maybe I want 3 expensive grinders!

@Philbert . . .I was reading a thread over on "AS", and I seen that you have a square grinder......

I bought it (RS II) used from another member when Silvey announced that they were stopping production. Thought it would be interesting to play around with square ground chain, but have not gotten around to it. Pretty happy with round ground chain I am not doing production cutting or racing.

Hey do your square ground chains hold up goodnin hardwood or are they best for softwood

I cut mostly softwood (Pine)- just because it is the most plentiful around here for a firewood hack like myself. Many of guys on here will tell you it holds up just as well as round ground chisel for "work" in hardwoods too.

I know this will prove I know nothing about square grinding, but do you guys mostly grind the chiesel chains like stihl RS and Oregon LPX into square ground????

I used to use strictly Stihl RM or semi-chisel....anout a year ago I got into the RS or chisel chain and I like it a lot....

Here lately I really like using the stihl RS chain.... I just got 4-loops of Oregon LPX on sale in the mail...2-20" and 2-25" loops, so I will see how I like oregons full-chisel chain!!!

I got 2-20 for $9.99.... I also got 2-25" for 11.99..... with free shipping....

Great deal. I have bought some 'once used - never sharpened' chains off eBay for $4-$6 each, with shipping. Worked out good for me.

We have a local 'big box' store here - had Oregon S56 (3/8 low profile, .050 gauge, 56 drive links) 2 packs on sale for around $17, before their 11% rebate (you Midwest guys know who I am talking about), which comes out to about $8 per loop, with tax.

Hard to charge $7 per loop to sharpen them! Fortunately, some stores still sell those same loops for $23 (whew!).

Well you guys help me so here it is.... go to left coast supply.... the 72lgx is a web special... can get up to 20 chains!!!!!
Make sure you buy other supplies from them, not just the deals. When you find a company you like doing business with. Stay with them. I have talked to them guys before, there great to do business with.

Oh and I thought I should tell you guys this.... I picked up a 024 yesterday(damn clean and for $40 with B&C), and went to a local dealer to get parts.... well on my way out I seen groups of chain with tags in them.... well being curious, I had to check them out.... sure enough they were chains that were ground at this dealer for their customers.... WOW, they were sad looking to say the least.... Hell some of the chains had burnt cutters!!!!.... I thought to myself, wow even the first chain I ground wasn't this bad!!!

Next time I go there I am going to ask what kind of grinder they use and how much they charge.... obviously I won't say anything about their poor grinding methods, but I do wish I could take their customers!!!!!:firedevil:
What bar and chain do you run on your 024?
