.404 Oregon 27ax semi chisel chain.

first time in my old but new to me grinder. Been awhile since I sharpened but should have been 30-60-0 on the angles. Rakers taken down .030” as well. Compared to my old harbor freight grinder this chain has a real nice edge in it and can’t wait to try it. Any extra input would be appreciated. Main use is milling but I’ll flush cut stumps or buck large rounds from time to time. All PNW species.51F39BA0-5B9E-4E8B-BD51-B3C1F5E71884.jpegDB0102D8-DB2D-4671-8DFC-96A9A0723BC7.jpeg

Took a little bit of time to play with the sdm-4 a little. Much more technical than the rs-2. I do like how it has a “clamp” to hold the chain steady while grinding. I will need to profile the wheel a touch lower, as I was just getting into the straps

So I was shocked a d suprised this Christmas. Jayme had been listening to me talk about getting a chain grinder, but not being willing or able to justify to cost. So she suprised me with this. Not top of the line but a very good one none the less.

Define 'not top of the line' please! That is the model I would recommend for most users who are not on a tight budget.

The Oregon / Tecomec grinders are extremely popular throughout the world, and parts are widely available. That model is made in Italy, has improved, double-side clamping of the chain, and a unique feature to allow compensation for grinding wheel wear, along with a light, 300W motor, and the ability to grind all three, main sharpening angles.

While some people may prefer the 'automatic' (hydraulic) clamping mechanism of the Oregon 610-120 models, for highly repetitive use, they also have the potential for more things to go wrong (leaks). The simpler nature of this model will last for years of regular grinding, including shop use, without any problems.

I actually just brought the 420-120 which is just under the 520-120. Strange that the 520 came what appears to be an incandescent lamp. Mine came with a LED lamp. Just got a lot learning to do on it as I have very sharpen with a grinder.

If the chain lock down is anything like the 420 which looks to be put a little grease on the contact points.

Haha, when I said not top of the line was meaning Silvey or one of the thousand $ options.
That is a very goind point about the 620 and leaks.

I have 2 of the 620 120 chain grinders. I have done a few hundred chains with no problems so far.
Not trying to imply that they are problematic; just that over time, the mechanical operation offers fewer potential problems, and ones that might be easier to solve. Some of the earlier hydraulic clamp models had some leak issues. There is clearly an advantage for highly repetitive chain sharpening, to eliminate manual operation of the clamp.

I like the one on the left. Let me know if you decide to sell it!
Its going to take a lot for me to sell my raker grinder! Im currently taking some of these machines apart and figuring out if i can machine parts to replicate them so there may just be a "new" HDG-6 or SDM-4 for sale in the future
