I can't wait to get home and get a pic of oregons lo-pro style chain.... I looked at a cutter last night and it has a VERY aggressive top-plate angle, almost looks square ground!!!!!

I will get some pics when I get home.... I have not cut with the chain, so it's still brand new!!!

I've been reading and watching this thread for a few days and dang it it didn't get to me. Years ago I used to take my chains in to have them cleaned up. (I like rocks) But after a while it seemed like no one could grind a chain anymore lots of buns and obviously different length teeth so I quit dropping them off and just relied on hand filing. I can file pretty darn good but over the years the hands have decided that they don't like filing as much as they used to. My son is a tree trimmer and files a damn sharp chain but he isn't around a lot and can't file a milling chain to save his kester. After checking the forum the other night I checked a swap and sell site and there was a saw chain grinder. long story short I picked up a brand new grinder for $50. It's just one they sell at Northern Tool but I figured the price was right and I like to learn before I invest a lot of money. I putzed with it a little cold in the garage tonight, It's -18 outside and only 25 in the garage. I will have to fire up the heater to play more with it. I am sure I will have a lot of questions as I try to figure this thing out.

Well hello sir!!!!

As you have read, I fairly recently got into the obsession of chain grinding.... like you I was a strictly hand-file guy....well I had played with the cheap HF grinder and actually got some decent results, so I said hell with it and got an Oregon grinder....All I can say is WOW, if a guy takes time to correctly set-up the grinder and learn the grinding basics, you can turn out a really nice chain!!!

There are a lot of very knowledgeable guys on here with YEARS of experience with grinders.....I like to learn, so as you can tell I ask a lot of questions, and I post pics of chains I ground for all to critique....after a few practice runs I am turning out chains that throw very nice chips.....

One last thing..... one thing that helped me TREMENDOUSLY, get a brand new chain and put it on your grinder, and try to get-up your grinder to match that angle.....yes there are "factory" settings for each brand of chain, but each grinder is set-up differently...

Good luck and can't wait to hear how it goes for ya!!!!!!

I have heard good things about the northern tool grinder. And you certainly got a good deal on it.I'm pretty sure there are some good tweaks that you can do too make it even better. I'm sure there's a thread or two on it just do a search. The guys on here are always happy to give advice should you need it.

Anyone familiar with the Foley 308 grinder? Have a chance to pick one up for $200. It appears to be in great shape just not sure what it's worth and if they're any good??

Have any pictures
Unfortunately no. I went to buy some other tools today and the guy had it there along with some other belsaw brand sharpeners that I know nothing about. It looked complete and wasn't rusted or beat up. Was on its own pedestal with a foot pedal. Very sturdy built machine.

Just wondered if they're any better than a good bench mount grinder.

Couple of threads on these on Arboristsite, Chainsaw Repair, and other forums - just do a Google search for "Foley 308 grinder" to see some other comments.

I am not sure what a fair price is, but ask yourself if you think that it offers any advantages over an Oregon / Tecomec style grinder, and if you think that you can get parts for it, if needed. They look like they take up a bit more space, and use less common wheels.

So if it works, and you like it, it could be a good deal. But compare it against your other options.
