The angles to sharpen a carbide chain on a grinder are a bit different. Top plate angle is almost 70 degrees. Doesn't cut as fast but stays sharp longer. Rocks and concrete will damage a carbide chain. But you can cut dirt.
I see, I bet that's stuff is a pain to sharpen/grind too.....

I do know hitting metal sucks, no worse feeling than having to grind new cutters almost half way back!!!!

Me?

The grinding wheels would be used to support my 'No-Kill Chain Shelter'!

Bars are a separate specialty. If I had a 'Bar Shop' (don't have the room, even if I scored one) I would consider reconditioning bars. Helps to be able to weld, and to have access to a mill, to fully recondition bars. Note - some models of Barshop also had a hammer like tool for flattening bars / closing rails.

That's awesome philbert.... sadly I can see that this is a dieing art, most people won't even sharpen their own chain, let alone pay to fix a guide bar....VERY cool philbert!!!!

Hey if you ever think about it, will you take a pic of the carbide chain.... I would like to see a freshly ground carbide cutters profile.....

Oh also I am sure I have asked you but can't remember LOL, but do you clean your chains before you grind with the CBN wheel....... I personally have NOT been cleaning chains unless they are really bad looking!!!!

Then more reason for you to go buy one!!!!
Hey do you use round or square ground for your work chains???

Did you ever get the round grinder you got set-up yet....if so, please let us know what you think of her.... and if course post a pic of the cutters after you grind a chain with it!!!!

Some consumer bars are only $20. Some professional, specialty, or harvester bars are over $300! Some bars are antique, historically or sentimentally important, or just no longer available. So some may be worth it and some not.

In 'older days' the cost of labor was cheaper, compared to the cost and availability of materials, so we fixed more stuff, rather than replacing it.

CBN won't sharpen carbides. You would need actual diamond wheel. Also available from Diamond Wheels

Carbide pictures. The angle on box says 75 degree for top plate. Plus a 15 degree offset. I can only do that much offset on my 620 grinder. The 511ax only does 10.

Looks very nice. I have a couple of old, metal cabinets that I keep that kind of stuff in. Not as neat or organized. I need to dig a little sometimes to find what I have.

@ Douglas Ostrander.
How do you like your Oregon 620-120 compared to your
511-AX? I've also got a 620.

So far I like it pretty well. The hydraulic assist clamp does seem to help speed things along. Sometimes I wonder if I should have just gotten the 511ax. Got it was on sale within $40-50 bucks of what I could have got the 511ax for. Still trying to use the pink wheels up that came with it. They load up petty quick, and I'll burn the cutters if I'm not careful. Seems like I'm always re-dressing on the pink. May switch over to CBN after there worn down.

Yes as my "Teachers" here and another guy that's helped me get started correctly told me, always keep fresh abrasive and don't let the wheel get the black ring of death LOL.....I know you already know alot about grinding, I am just saying this was a great tip for me....I use my fingers to pull the grinder head down in short tap-tap-tap motions, and for the most part don't burn cutters....as you stated when the wheel gets built up, they can and do burn(yes I have burnt cutters!!!)....

Well I will have a CBN here soon so I will post pics and my thoughts on the wheel....I am very excited to get the wheel....I mean yes the pink wheels need maintenance, but I am getting great results with them for my use anyway!!!!

I should add I still am happy with the deal I got on my Oregon 520.... I paid $324 shipped to my door.... I still have not seen any 520s prices lower than that....

Well guys I sold a nice ms250 Last night that I rebuilt to an older man around late 50's....turns out he was a VERY nice man, he told me about how he used to cut a cut a lot of wood, sharpen his own chains, and sell some firewood....

Well as with anyone i sell a saw to, we go directly to the wood pile so they can cold start the saw and use it for themselves, so they can see it's a sound machine....he started it, revved it up(as they all do), and then made a few cuts in an elm or ash piece....after the 2-cuts he turned off the saw and sat it down.... As he was reaching for money I said "well sir that chain is ok, but could stand touched up", he said son this saw cuts great and that that chain is plenty sharp, LOL...

I have to remember that 99% of people cutting firewood are not obsessed with have a "perfectly" ground/filed chain!!!!

I am loving the 620. Got it to be faster on long chains. And it is way faster. First long chain (196 dl) was done so fast I thought I must have made a mistake and didn't grind all of it. But it was all done. A few less steps to grind each cutter. Never put the pink wheels on it. Started with a new CBN.
