"DEFINITELY" is not a word used very often in the axe community.

I used to spend way too much time looking at axes and ID'ing them. It got to the point that I could tell axe brands by the shape and styling of the heads.

I'll try to remember to post a pic of a axe I have, see how good you are, if you can tell me who made it, without seeing the stamp.

Soo…trying not to catch up to @Moparmyway but doing it anyway… while looking for old school rafting pattern axes I came across a NOS “old style” Council. It showed up today. Has some pros and cons. Basically I love the head, wow does it sink in wood chopping! Definitely not a splitter! Longer front to back. I think the slightly smaller poll might be better when trying to hit only one wedge in a stack. But the handle is a little short and doesn’t have a grip swell or ring at the end, might be hard to hang on to.

Been reading and watching vids on splitters. It seems the stihl basic wedge shape of their splitting axe and maul is the best for either splitting or not without getting stuck too much. Also, apparently eucalyptus is one of the hardest things to split. 😆 Gonna keep grinding on that husky. Wish my wrist would hurry up and heal.

I wound up with a haft like that, I used a bunch of electrical tape to build up a swell and then "smoothed" the outside with a layer of electrical tape starting from the head end and ending at the base. I think it works pretty well for a wedge-beater. Or, you could flatten the two sides and laminate on a real swell.

Why would it be difficult and a waste?
I guess just seems like a waste to not use the handle that’s there, buy another, and spend the time changing it. But the handle could be reused for a smaller axe or hatchet I suppose.

Cut this thing up and attempted to split it with my new style council banger (28” handle same head as their splitting head). It bounced off several times and I quit and noodled it. I figured it would get stuck. Silly little 16” dia stuff. 140BD5E5-6B06-4423-A21D-C0CE713461B5.jpeg

Makes more sense now.

Both of these you shared a few pages back, are both 5 lb heads?

Yes, same exact head just longer handle on the splitter. I think they are in the profiles pic. I wish I’d had the 36” to try on that ficus today.

I also chopped a limb on the ficus today. The wider wedge shape new style did not penetrate as much, but it blew the chips out. The sharper angled old style sunk deep but didn’t eject the chips.

They look nice, I want to get one, but the few places I checked online all show them as back ordered right now with the 36" handle.
