I know that it makes me sounds boring,

And it could get me ostracized on a fan site like this.

But it's an election year, so a good time for all opinions to be heard.

Anybody else satisfied with stock chainsaws? Happy if they start and run the way that STIHL or Husqvarna (or other) engineers intended them to? I never heard of 'modded' saws until frequenting sites like this. And a few have been fun to try at GTG's. But I have had plenty of frustration with saws that wold not start, or were dirty, or poorly maintained. So give me a clean, well maintained saw that starts, runs, and has a sharp chain, and I am probably going to be a happy camper.

I am no pro, but rather a firewood/farmer hack and my stock 550xp, 562xp, and 372xp do me just fine. As stated before, with a properly sharpened chain I am extremely happy and productive when I need to be. My MMWS ms460 is for play and making quick work of trees.

I have a mm'd ms390 that works great, but I want to open it up a bit. It does hold it's own even without porting. I have a homelite ranger that had to be ported because it wouldn't cut wood.
Modded and ported saws are great. I modify everything I have. Heck, even my Hud-Son sawmill engine has been modified. Does that void any warranty?

The ported saws is all in the mentality of the individual. Most people can get along fine with stock stuff but then there is people like me that always wants more power in everything. Yes stock stuff does as its intended but it's not near as much fun. Ones you get the feeling of more power it's hard to go back to stuff that's stock

It depends on the saw and what you intend to do with it. All of my saws are ported except an 044 and an MS440, but both of them have everything done to them I can do w/o porting. (muff mod, low restriction air filter, timing advance and base gasket delete). Adding just a low restriction air filter and dp muffler to a 044/440 makes such a difference in performance I could not imaging running one w/o these modifications. The stock saws have 20" bars, and my ported 044 has a 28" bar. I would not run a 28" bar on an unported one.

I own 3 046/460s, all ported, and love em for bucking. I would not own any of them if they were not ported, as I can get an unported 044 to run right with them, but when ported the 046/460 is noticeably stronger.

When I have time to cut wood, I like to be as productive as possible, so I have mostly ported saws and run square file chain. There is nothing more valuable than your time, and it is very rewarding to be productive.

My ported saws have not been any less reliable than stock.

Real nice saw, ran one again at GTG, along with a new Ver II 362, and IMO, they are all darn close. You would have to time them to tell the difference, if there is any. And the Ver II 362 is lighter than both the others (comparable with the J Red version).

You can always justify another saw.

The only ported saw I have is my 460. Is it necessary? No, but it sure is fun to run.
All my other saws get by with muffler mods and cut wood just fine. It's like the 20" bar I run on my 441. Way too much saw for the bar, yet lots of fun to play with.

I think people who say they are satisfied with stock saws are just trying to start drama. Others are misinformed.
As if chainsaw manufacturers would de-tune their product without being forced to by regulations. Lol
Hopping up a saw back in the day was more for fun and a morale boost, now a days it is necessary to make sure your saws run right and last the lifetime they're supposed to.

Ive had more than my fair share of ported chainsaws from multiple builders...not all of them were that great..better than stock ?.. yes..very impressive ? .. no.

I think some of these newer MT/AT saws run just tits with a muffler mod.

Yes, but even with just a muffler mod the saw isn't stock.

I see no need to run a stock saw, I believe choked up stock saws don't run as a two stroke is intended to run.
