That is a stout saw! Wish I knew about it when I bought the 395xp. Really, I should have just joined this forum before pulling the trigger on any mill saw. It looks like it would fit the Logosol saw carriage as well...

Just hope it’s stout enough for what it’s going to be used for.

I missed that the Echo was ported, for some reason I thought that was stock.
That torque from the 1201..

That's pretty much how all of the Echo motors are, especially the older ones. They make peak torque at a lower RPM range and it usually has a large band.

In fact, most Japanese-designed two-strokes are that way. We had an old Hodaka Combat Wombat when I was kid and it liked to climb hills and didn't need high revs to do it.

That saw was built for tq, hp gain is a by product from mod work. With 72" b&c rpm should sit somewhere between 4k to 6k range in milling im guessing?

Here's an educated guess of what happens "behind" the dyno

After about 7k rpm mark 1201 loses steam and tend to lose to the other ported big saws. If the cutting rpm stays below that range, 1201 will hold its power. At about 4.5k rpm mark 1201 has tq of 2 stock 395xp

You guys are really making me regret the 395 altogether! The day I was paying for my tractor I saw the brand new 395xp on the counter, and I asked about it and they gave me a discount since it had been kicking around so long. I felt like $999 out the door was pretty good since it came with a 28" bar and chain, I planned on using it for milling since day one.
Don’t regret it. Get it ported. My ported 395 makes me regret my 3120 purchase as a mill saw. My 3120 is ported as well, but with a 36” 404 bar, the 3120 really has little gains over it. The 395 is more like a 2 series Husky. It’s an old design that’s simple and overbuilt. A 661 is a different animal altogether. Great saw, but different. Unless you plan on over a 3 foot mill bar, just get the 395 ported.

For anything below 36" with 3/8ths ported 395 will fit better for milling, i got a ported 395 it pulls 42" 404 in crosscut. Slightly better than a stock 880
Anything above 42~60" its all about tq

Has anyone tested timing advance on the dyno? Would be interesting to see what going to far with the advance does or too little. I guess most guys test in the wood by listening for popcorn? Back off timing when they hear it. Or measure a certain amount off the key. Or no advance at all on certain models.

Two .25” holes?

Just had an almost new MS461 come to me with a burned P+C. You had better believe after I install the Meteor piston it will go back to him with two 1/4" holes in the muffler cover and no limiters on the carb!

Not saying more won't work, but on some stock saws you may loose throttle response, so I just do what works. Also, the saw is louder but not obnoxious.

Several tree guys, pro firewood guys, and homeowners like when I do this for them. It is a cheap and easy fix.

I think the 461 needs it more than a 440 or 460 cause they just run too hot stock.
