All of the following can be purchased complete or complete in pieces.
MS180, MS181, MS250, MS260, MS290, MS390, MS360, MS361, MS440*, MS660, 070, 090AV
346, 365, 372 maybe a few other models on the husky side

For most models there are a few telltale signs to look for.
Stihl keeps the recoil cover for the MS660 intentionally high as a part to fight counterfeiting.
It is a lot easier to prosecute a counterfeit that includes a registered trademark so the molded STIHL name makes the recoil a good "tell" for the MS660.

I think another scarry thing is that some one some where is unfortunatly selling these things and could care less about the poor sap to thinking he got a fair deal on a new saw what a descrase some of our fellow American brothers have turned to.

It's one thing if someone were to build a saw out of parts for their own use, quite another to do so then sell it while passing it off as oem. However if someone were to do this and be upfront that this is not oem and the buyer was ok with that because they got what they thought was a good deal then who are we to judge.

It's all about perspective, to us in this little bubble of saw junkies, if it ain't stihl or husky then go kick rocks. there is a lot of wood cut out there with Chinese built poulans. They may not last as long but they will put wood in the truck as spike60 says.

Well you are more informed than most, but my point still stands. There is a lot of wood cut out there with what we as saw geeks would consider sub standard equipment.

You have to look at it like this johnny homeowner has a tree fall in his yard, he doesnt heat with wood and probably will use a saw once every five years depending on storms. If he goes and buys a $100 saw from Wal-Mart it has paid for itself on one tree vs hiring someone to come clean it up. Now he may decide that he wants something a little bigger and he could get a plastic name brand saw from Lowe's or ace hardware. Or he may order one online from somewhere like what is posted above. If it works and does it's job even once then it has paid for itself in my opinion.

Hey, after about 20 years the patent protection is over, and if there were not knock offs, the price of OEM would still be through the roof.

It is just like generic drugs. If you don't change or improve your product over 20 or so years, then anyone is free to copy it, just the way it is (except your logo, and maybe the saw name).

Despite all the complaining out there, this may be the best thing that ever happened for us to get OEM parts at reasonable prices.

If they don't improve the "old" copies to meet emissions, then they won't be allowed to sell them here.

I thought those saws we made specifically for cutting down rice trees?

It's a real shame that this happens to everything these days.

That blue looks pretty cool.

If I owned a Stihl that those covers fit on I'd order a set

There are so many knock offs of everything now of days it's impossible to list .Some work well, some aren't worth a pinch of coon chit .

Not chainsaw related but one company,Doorman actually makes automotive products that are better than OEM at a fraction of the price .

With OEM dealer parts no matter what they are they have go by a dozen levels of sales before the end user gets them and every one of those jacks the price some .To win that game you have to cut a few of them out of the mix.

Buisnesses have to turn a profit or else they can't stay in business .Easily under stood but business being business I'd just as some some of that remains in my pocket .

If you don't change or improve your product over 20 or so years, then anyone is free to copy it, . . .

Granted, but there are differences.

If you invent the first string trimmer, and I come out with my own version of a string trimmer after your patent expires, that's legit. Patent protection is limited.

If you reproduce NLA parts for products that manufacturers no longer support, that is legit and a service to consumers.

But if you 'copy' the look and appearance of a product, with the intent to deceive people, that's different. That's sleazy. That is why some companies try to trademark (or use other intellectual property protections on) specific colors, designs, appearances features, etc. 'John Deere green', 'DeWalt yellow', etc. for certain lines of products.

And if the 'clone' parts or product are not substantially of the same quality, or suitable for their intended use, then I have issues with that too. Especially with things where failure can lead to an injury or severe damage (e.g. burning hover-boards). That is not legitimate business, but fraud.
