Having a plan to start with is a important part. You have asked the question, got your answers, and successfully accomplished your plan. The proper tools for the job is a major plus. You got something to work with. Are giving the saw back you your brother in law?

Muffler modification next?

Yes the saw is going back to him. I'm going to look at case matching the lower transfers and then muffler mod as well.

Summit racing has some nice degree wheels for a good price. I picked up a cheap drill chuck at harbor freight. Check out the stihl 090 build thread for how I used it. I sense a "how to use a degree wheel" or all things degree wheel thread coming. It is just a handy way of verify and quantifying your work, and giving those numbers to others allows for other folks, far distant from you to be able to repeat the process with some measure of repeatably. When you take notes of your own work, then you can test different numbers against known values, make a saw just like the one before etc.

I'd love to see a "using a degree wheel thread". I think I have decent grasp on how to use one. What gets me all messed up is the math and proper procedures for figuring out the numbers like blowdown and durations. I can read how all day long and it just doesn't "click" for me. I think it would be easier for me to understand if I actually had a degree wheel on a saw and played with it while reading. Soon enough I'll have it figured out

Nice work Dan. What's next in line?

I've made a bunch of different degree wheel setups. This is the one I use the most, scaled, printed on heavy photo paper, stuck to a clear plastic disc with a coin sized rare earth magnet on the back.
