262XP Rebuild - Junk Pile Save

Next I got some parts off of a junk 257 that @Tpagel generously gave me a couple months ago to support my 262 builder. The tank, carb and handle will work/look great on my saw...I owe you one bud!



Tank is darn near mint and all the mounts are nice and tight.

The plug wire was really beat up from improper routing and luckily I had this length of plug wire laying around from when I put a black coil in my 372. Just gotta trim it to the correct length once the saw is back together.

Once all the grime was cleaned off the crank case revealed itself to be in very good condition. Only minor corrosion near the coil, and 1 idiot mark from someone installing the clutch cover wrong. Some peoples kids I guess.

It’s all cleaned and ready for assembly. It will be a couple weeks before I get all the parts on my list rounded up. Now it’s the waiting game that we all know and love...tick tock tick tock

There are some light grooves above the exhaust port. If I were building this for someone I would replace it. But since it’s just for me I’m going to run it.

Searching the internet to find out which crank I have and my part number 50618 19-01 doesn’t match any 254, 257, 261 or 262 part numbers on Parts tree...strange. Am I missing something @Tor R or @Spike60 ? Hoping the “XB” on my crank means “Xtra Beef” Lol! A guy can hope can’t he?

I have a couple 365-72 cranks with different numbers and even lobe shapes. None match any of the current factory numbers I can find.

I haven't decided yet Dan. My normal routine is build it stock to get a feel for it then port it. But, those tiny uppers have got me leaning toward at least opening them up. What are your thoughts on it? You have been hip deep in 262's for a while now.

I'm sure the carb will be fine. I'm going to put a kit in it just for insurance.

Well we know these cylinders are factory hot rods. So before messing with it, try to think of what the factory engineers were thinking...

That's exactly what I was thinking. The huge lowers with small uppers will ( in my opinion) make for a very torqey saw with peak power being at an overall lower RPM.

I’m not so sure the size of the uppers makes peak power lower. On Ryan’s KS cylinder I just finished, I barely raised them and didn’t widen at all.

I think they are going for velocity. In fact I think they have the transfers just about perfect on these for great scavenging! The next one I do I’m going to try cutting the jug so the transfers don’t need touched. Then adjust intake and exhaust accordingly.
But that’s just my theory...
