084 vs 088. Which is better?

I was thinking I might go tinker with it some more but I am 99% sure the coil is limited so I am just going to work on fitting the 066 coil and be done with it

Ahhh larger diameter flywheel.... yes.

Did you keep the top mounting point the same?

From memory, fitted coil with lead exiting the coil facing towards bottom of saw. Bolted directly to top mounting point and made bracket for the rest.

Yes

Is yours the 2 part or single? Could have a bad igniter module if 2 part.

Na single but I want it unlimited anyway so may as well modify it to run available coils

Sorry to hijack, but I'm just curious how much timing advance you chaps would run on an 084?

Depends on how long you want your arm stretched.

In the couple I have done, apart from any inherent advance from fitting 066 coil, non as they were destined to be milling saws.

I would like to know what anyone else runs too.

do you know if there were any non limited coils fitted to the 084 from factory? If not I may go the same route and fit an 066 coil with a D handle starter

I am probably wrong, but I thought the CDI one was the only limited coil.

Why there as two keyways in some versions of the flywheel.

Stolen from a post on "that other site"

I spoke with my region's Stihl Distributor Tech and he explained an 088 ignition module would not work on an 084 due to timing issues because the 088 is a different design engine and flywheel. The tech explained I was about the 3rd consumer in the last 3-4 months to call about the 084 ignition module parts availability.

The coil part number 1124-400-1308 is no longer available starting sometime in 2010. The tech advised me to call the Stihl HQ in America and see what they might have to say about having that coil in stock with another distributor. My understanding is the 084 coils were all made by Bosch and if one could get the Bosch number off of the coils, Bosch might have some on a shelf somewhere, possibly?

There are three ignition module produced for the 084:

1124-400-1305 Unlimited Ignition Module which requires the Trigger 1118 400 1001 (First Production)

1124-400-1306 Limited Ignition Module (Second Production)

1124-400-1308 Unlimited Ignition Module (Third Production)

My 064 is running an after market 066 coil and I think its well advanced with nothing off the key.
Makes it harder to start and kinda angry...... but I like its attitude

Once can always take a bit off the key and retard the timing if its too nasty.

They can basically charge what ever they want ontop mate. It sucks for the end customer but is completely with in their rights as a dealer. My dealer is just pretty good to me because i by a metric tonn of parts per year.

AM coils seem to be hit or miss for me. The timing can be all over the place. I've swarn off them unless I have no other option.
