@Mastermind
Is the Cross performance cylinder for the 084 your design?
Do we have any timing info on it?

I would be interested to know whats different

No sir. Andrew Wellman did the prototype for that one. I did a thread on it awhile back. Can't remember if the numbers were in it or now.

I liked where they were.....I do remember that.

Sounds pretty similar to the UK then! I'm not too clued up on Australian geography to say the least, how far is that from Melbourne? That's where we'd most likely be going as the FIL lives there, and I have no doubt the Mrs would want to be nearby
Oh its a fair hike, 10 hour drive or more.
I think a couple of the other Aussie members live down in Mexico?

You lot can keep you bad weather.
Its blown up here and gone all cold. Spoilt my Friday afternoon beers on the balcony :-(
How did you fare mate... hope all is well!
Yeah I'm fine. Missed the tornados that belted the top of yorkes/southern flinders - that was proper bad.
Lots of flooding in my part of the world, but it's mostly affecting townies who built houses in stupid places because it hasn't rained like this in 20 years. You know the ones, mega buck houses in places that no local would ever build.
Spraying work is slow, slashing will be late, but I've got saw work coming out of my ears.
I've done without a >100cc saw for years, but I'm seriously thinking now is the time to get my act together. The 385 is fine till the wood is a bit dirty and then something that could pull 48" of 404 would come in handy. Every extra sharpening in sideways rain is tedious.

we could go slabbing together :) the weather is better suited to a pom here in melbourne too. Australia is as big as the US !

I'm over near Perth (south east off). My backyard for work is the "south west" of western Australia, about the same size as Israel is. Pretty amazing if you actually think about it.

Back to 120cc Stihls

I have been looking very seriously into 084's
I have a question about 084 air filters as there seems to be 2 very different styles.
I am interested to know which one is the newer and which one is the older of the styles and which one flows the best.

Style 1:

Well, that`s a little bit difficult with the air filters on the 084 and all the changes that were made. Simply your Style 1 is the older version (air filter fleece and flocked (2 versions) 1989, 1990). The HD filter in your Style 2 picture is newer (around 1995) and the HD2 (2010) is the latest style.

Rare to see style 1 here. All the ones I have played with have been style 2.
I thought it was more of an option thing rather than a date thing.

The real rare bit is the top cover not being mangled..

So guys...... which is better/preferred?
I'd pick a HD all day every day.

Those flocked filters are easy to get a small tear in one corner that you might miss, that and the fact that the old style are just that, old. There must be a reason they developed the modern design and use it on all he big saws these days. And I doubt it's anything to do with the EPA, as I can't see the filter affecting emissions.

Oh and the fact that you have a pre and post filter on this setup on top of a good quality filter. To me it looks like a design that'll help my big saws last longer, especially when getting a hammering milling
