I just confirmed my above 066 is not a 1996 but a 1997 model (last of the flat top 066 before the EPA 1998 round tops).
Confirmed that with Dave's info:
1997_ 064/066 after serial# 133459523 is first plastic name badge.
Mine has a plastic badge and is serial#134989911
I'm proud to have the last good one:D
Same era as mine

Yup with Dave's explanation of the 1998 066 with EPA certified limiter caps, different port timing and smaller exhaust openings doesn't sound like a very good saw. Lol

It's almost a twin with my 134989911 ....Lol
Its a 1997 but your metal flywheel sounds not right. Only the poly wheel fits the larger crank stub.
Was there a 660 later on with a metal wheel?

I think that 066 is right. It has a metal flywheel, and M8 flywheel nut. It does not have the larger crank stub, and M10 flywheel nut.

I don't everything about 064/066/660's, but from what I've read on AS, and here, and looking over parts list.

It's my understanding, that there were 3 different crankshafts used in 064, 066, and 660's.

064 and early 066 used part # 1122-030-0406 crankshaft, 12 rollers on the big end rod bearing. Metal flywheel, and M8 flywheel nut.

In 1994 at serial # 129588002 they beefed up crank to 13 rollers on the big end bearing, still used M8 flywheel nut and metal flywheel, this crankshaft part # 1122-030-0407 (this is what crank is in my 066 pictured above)

At serial # 131917066 in 1996 they changed the crankshaft yet again, to 1122-030-0408, this is when they started using the poly flywheel and M10 flywheel nut. This crank was in the late flat top saws, and is the same crank used in the round top 066, and ms660's

Correct me if that is wrong info, just from my understanding of reading on AS, and looking at parts lists.

maulhead,
You got a frankenstein saw there.
You must have the older small stub narrow crank in 2 mismatched cases. The serial # poly wheel crankcase half is holding that older crank and metal flywheel mated with a older metal wheel side crankcase half.
Only reasoning I can see.

So the whole powerhead could be older with just a newer PTO side crankcase half with the 1997 serial #

Yeah it does not make sense, does it? Here is a picture of the serial number on that 066.

DSCN5950.JPG

The local guy I bought that 066 from, bought it new at the small town mom & pop dealer, in our area, where I buy saws, and parts. He said it has never been part or messed with since new.

But the serial number does not jive for a metal flywheel, small crank stub, M8 flywheel nut saw.

Is the serial number stamped some where on the flywheel side case? I know 1128 saws are stamped on the gasket surface, but I can't find any stampings on this 066?

------------

Here is a second 066 I have, bought it in box in pieces from a different tree guy. It's a flat top saw, with the poly flywheel, etc.

There is a date code clock with a letter in it to tell the year of the part.
I found one on my 1992 066 crankcase right in behind the flywheel housing where the tank housing goes against. Same letter as under the top cover and rear handle.
If you can find it post it here

The year letter for the early 066 with small stub, 4mm narrower crank would be R S T U V ('91, '92, '93, '94, '95)
The first year 1991 066 may have parts manufactured in 1990 with a Q code.

That saws is in pieces right now, so seeing it should be easy...

Only other markings I see is this. More of a chart looking thing, then a clock. On the left side of it is a S T U V W

If I understand this right?

Your thinking I have a poly flywheel, PTO side case half, mated up to a metal flywheel, side case half?

Is that even possible? Didn't they change the size of the mixing chamber when they went to the bigger crank in the poly flywheel 066?

Dave's post back on page 2 of this thread gives the crankcase volume measurements...
