Does anyone turn the flywheel back & forth while doing press/vac testing 2 check crank seals? Well even if all checks out fine ya did the right thing Mike shutting down saw and checking it on the bench. After 23 years running a saw you know when it don't sound right.
Yup....and i repeat the overall test 3 times for good measure.

I always rotate the flywheel. It moves the gauge all over the place, but it should still hold vac.

Does anyone ever check vac and pressure while hot if the saw acts up while hot?

How can you?
Gloves for the muffler block and the rest won't be hot enough to matter by the time you get to it. I hope I didn't paint some picture of it as a race to test it before it stops sizzling. Lol
You can't always trust testing cold unless the seals are brand new.

The idea is great. I just can't figure out the execution. It will not be hot by the time I'm setup.

Mike, sounds like yer all good.

I didn't know what to think either, until I had a saw with a vacuum leak fail the test. It was an 026 that ran fine, but the idle wandered. It couldn't hold 10 inches of vacuum for more than 5 seconds and it still ran ok, just with an idle issue.

If I can get a saw to hold vacuum for 1 minute, I call it good. I use gorilla tape too. Cheap and effective. AngeloC turned me on to it.
Is this the stuff ? went looking as iv not heard of it. 48 mm (2 in ) rather than 25mm (1 in) i figured was better for spanning in 1 strip ?Screen Shot 2016-07-04 at 10.39.45.png

Yup. I clean the exhaust and intake ports with acetone, cut that and fit it. I check through the impulse line, if the saw model allows. It works great and is cheap/effective. A Beoch to pressure test with though, you need a third hand.

The only defect is when your wife/kids use it around the house and it's nowhere to be found. They don't understand the duct tape hierarchy.

Yea that is the tape, and thanks for all the great info guys.

I guess if I held 20 sec at 10, I'm good! 5 should be a lot easier.

Piece of bicycle inner tube between the muffler and cylinder.
Piece of heavy ziplock bag between intake boot and cylinder.

Started the 044 and let it idle for a good while, then cut a few 18" Oak rounds with it, all is well, thanks everyone.

I bought this saw new in 12/1993, so I have had it much longer than any other saw. In fact, it was my only saw for 18 years when I was heating with wood, so it has a special place with me and it bothers me if it does not run right. It is mostly just "old reliable"!

Good news Mike....Hey...gave you a chance to give a good look over the things that are mostly out of sight at the same time.

I think I will make some metal plates that will serve the same purpose, thanks for the advice. I'll also use either some carb cleaner or brake cleaner next time also.

Take some old carbs and glue on them some inner tube ( as the pictures ) so you have block off for many types of saws without to break your head with metal plates , gorilla tapes and much more , they fit perfectly and are more accurate
