Iirc I read a piece where it was stated taking back the gullet to far from the side profile also hindered.

Im curious what the physics behind this is. I have never tested to see but Im not sure I could duplicate exact chains without a grinder.
I don't get too carried away with gullet cleaning.
Just keep the big shelf from developing.

They were hypothesizing that a small shelf helped carry chips out

The longer shelf is supposed to prevent the side cutter from getting enough of a bite. It sorta turns into a depth raker on the side. Madsens explains it on a different web page than the one mentioned above.

I've seen an overcleared gullet work before. Lots of variables...

If you look at the corners of all those cutters only one doesn’t have a beak but is also the smallest sized cutting surface which would be great on a smaller cc saw with a long bar. A long gullet is just like a dull cutter I’ve left them long before and the chain will not cut at all even with a sharp cutter.

By 'long gullet', can I assume that's top to bottom and not front to back?

According to the madsens article, "They removed the gullets on some of the test chains and ran the tests again. Performance improved on all the chains when the gullets were removed."

So did just getting rid of the beaks make for the the improvement or was it that the gullets were moved back?

Terminology kills me when trying to understand some of this stuff, there's just no standard.
Almost as bad as cylinder porting...

I know what they mean in this instance but I still picture the gullet as the 'area' more or less below the top edge of the cutter, 'removing it' would separate the entire cutter from the chain, lol.
But that's just me...

With square you have standard terminology, your gullet is the material left below my knife tip there. Depending on how big they are, wheel size, and wood sometimes you can get away with enlarging the wheel to drop them well grinding without fully removing them.
