Well now if you stop and think about it who has seen a pin failure ? I haven't on anything .Piston failure yes .Rarely a rod but how can you really tell because if it comes apart that bad usually the piston will be just a pile of little aluminum scrap so how could you tell ?

Do any of you guys think you could use a tapered reamer to lighten the pins?

Or would they be to hard?

I was told to absolutely NOT to try this, as it would ruin the balance from not being absolutely perfect. Would cause more harm, than it did good.

Balance... who was it that made a full circle crank.... No balance there.

These factors are all real but I wonder if the order of magnitude is great enough to warrant consideration.

On the flip side I have heard lightened slugs cause a saw to spin up much quicker...

I have to believe anything that's lighter on the small end of the rod will help. It's all reciprocating weight not rotating weight.

has anyone checked a pin for hardness? Are they just case hardened and soft inside or hard tool steel throughout? Reamer will probably *s-word the bed trying to cut something 50-60 rockwell. It's essentially a bearing race after all.

I have a baby boring bar, just not sure if it's small enough.

Good carbide or ceramic will cut it for sure if things are rigid and setup right. I don't have a burnt up pin here or I would file test one.

Keep in mind you have to chuck up the pin to bore it out without harming the finish of the pin .With hard steel that isn't all that easy to do .All that forkin around if you really wanted a lighter pin use the OEM pin to begin with IMO .
This remind me of turning an 038 AV into a mag when it's a lot easier to just start out with a mag to begin with which in reality they made more of than the AV's. Different strokes for different folks though .

Now,hard steel .I cut the shaft down from a Ford water pump bearing to repair a Chevy 292 in line 6 .Being powdered metal it was so hard C2 carbide inserts would not cut it .It took ceramic .

Lots of ways to chuck it up without harm, but yes this is definitely an exercise in having thousands of dollars in machinery/tooling to save $20. However being that guy with thousands of dollars in tools... somedays it's better to waste my time making and fixing then buying... fine line though most days lol. Especially after you F up an expensive micro bar being a cheapskate
