My mention of the 10 speed was about as clear as Mississippi mud. Many of the early Honda units had a high and low gear box which essential gave them a 8 or 10 speed. In practicality it did not. It was not like a 2 speed axle in a truck. In 1982 Honda started the work ATV market with the 200E three wheeler. It had a 5 speed with a high low but NO reverse. The H/L shifter was not easily accessible. In 1983 they changed the paint scheme a bit and added a reverse but still keep the high and low. The H/L/R shifter was easily accessible on the left side. In 1984 they used that engine/tranny to build the first work four wheeler the Fourtrax 200. In 1985 they upped it to 250cc and eliminated the H/L and added a more user friendly reverse system that continued to possibly present day
Don't forget the '84 200es. The only year the 200 Big Red was shaft drive, and still retained the H/L sub trans... I happen to have one of those as well, pulls like a tractor, great little workhorse
